Welcome to the Army Rumour Service, ARRSE

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial military website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

Vote for up to 3 pictures please. Voting will close on the 17th of July.

At last - following the chaos of the upgrade we bring you the photo competition entries. Thank you to everyone who has entered - some truly great photos and you've given us fron page photos for the site for years to come.

We were very vague about the type of photo so it has been hard to give a criteria for you to use to judge. I apologise to the entrants for this - I will be more precise next time.

What I decided on was a 'desert island disks' approach (it's a dull program on R4 young'n). Anyway, you're stuck in your palm / coconut matting shack with only a cold beer to hand, and you are allowed up to 3 military photos on the wall (you have no porn with you, sorry.)

Are you looking for moody, humour, a reminder of past conflicts? Moody sunsets? firepower?

Just look through the slideshow here. The numbers are shown at the bottom of each photo. Use them for the poll above:

Or the normal gallery view here:

Please choose your favourite number and vote on this thread. Conversation welcome.

There's £250 to be won thanks to Steve at Towergate Wilson financial services.

Note, there is a duplicate photo - 54 and 31 are the same. I've taken the 54 option away and if you want to vote 54, chose 31 instead

  2. Some great shots there; hopefully the more green ones will win. An F15 looks good, but not necessarily what we're about.

Edited to add, where's my avatar?

  3. Voted! No. 40, the one with the NIG bayonetting an enemy haversack, or something. That one shows what training for soldiering should be. Then picture 33, some young lad in a sandy place far away. His expression and youth combined with his surroundings make it a good photo.
The prettiest picture, just by the way it looks: number 28. Black and white with some soldiers in a tunnel.

Voted but it was a difficult choice. Some outstanding pics there.

  5. 31 and 54 are the same.

Voted. As Sixty said, hard to choose only three of them.

  6. Who took 52? I think you may have been extremely close to me on that one!

  7. Great photos - that seem to fall into three main categories . . .

    (a) our present pre-occupation - sandy places and the people that live there,

    (b) aircraft “pornography”, and

    (c) photos of training/exercises redolent of the Cold War (i.e. temperate DPM).

    My first choice was No1 ( “. . . lest we forget”). The other two reminiscent of “ . . . training/exercises redolent of the Cold-War”.

However, I imagine that (rightly), the most popular will be from our present pre-occupation - sandy places and the people that live there.

GCO, when voting is complete, can we please have a Top-of-the-Pops, Eurovision-type, “chart run-down” ?

  8. Some incredible photos there, very, very nice work.

Good spot. I've taken 54 off the voting (had no votes) and will ask EvilAdjt to remove the duplicate on Monday.

  10. All very inspiring, but my votes go 1,40,35.Well done ,the photographers.

Some really good pictures with clear and interesting subjects. My choices 28,40,41. I think 28 is outstanding but is spoilt by the guy nearest the camera, who I presume is DS, wearing beret & hackle. Otherwise a very good composition with the troops disappearing into the smoke, redolent of the film "The Way Ahead". IMHO :)

  12. Went for 22 - 32 - 33.

something about a setting sun. for my first choice. The others for the look of the lad somewhere hot and dusty, the last for the phto itself not really saying anything just that i like it.

  13. No 18 top of my list.

  14. Same here .

  15. There seem to be quite a few well executed photographs of compositions similar to previous competition entries. The "tired looking chap in dessies" photo is good photography but doesn't get my photo on account of having voted for it last time.

1, 46, 13 all struck me as a bit good.
