Petition to scrap Foreign Aid target

Will be signing when I get home tomorrow.

Given that the UK is still spending £1 billion a week more than we bring in in tax, we simply can't afford this level of foreign aid. We're racking up our own debt so we can posture on the international stage.

Until people understand aid plays a critical part in our national security, we will continue to see this sort of thing pushed about.
Thin Pinstriped Line: Aiding and abetting? The vital importance of DFID and aid budget to delivering UK security goals.
No-one denies were should be spending some money on foreign aid, but you can only spend money you've got. And the £1 billion a week public spending deficit is a clear indication that we don't have that money.

Slash foreign aid to 0.4% of GDP, target it more carefully so we maintain our security goals and spend the savings on reducing our national debt - which is huge.

How public spending was calculated in your tax summary - GOV.UK

On government figures, the interest payments alone on our debt are £36.7 billion a year. That's the fifth biggest item of government expenditure, greater than we spend on defence (£36.6 billion), transport, (£28.1 billion) or foreign aid (£8.2 billion).

Do you personally spend money you haven't got?

Explain to me why a semi-bankrupt UK (because that's what we are) can keep on spending the same level of money on foreign aid when the interest payments alone on our debt are so huge.

I agree the FA budget should be significantly reduced to focus on our own debt and redistribute funds domestically rather than seeing our own infrastructure reduced or cut completely, I’m aware it’s political sensitive however difficult decisions need addressing when local services are struggling due to funding.

Then, once the U.K. has its ‘own’ house in order the Foreign Aid budget under proper consultation overhauled.

Signd a long while ago.

Alas this petition will not make one iota of difference to government spending on foreign aid.

Well....if we're going for the easy targets...why not cut the military again? After all they don't really do anything do they? Trident and its successor, what a waste...yada, yada, yada....

That's what the petition looks like to me. Pish spouted by those who don't know the area that they're talking about. DFID are very interested in VFM and exposing fraud, there are almost certainly areas that they can improve but they're influencing others for the UK as @jim30 makes clear . We need every bit of support that we can muster right now.

A somewhat eye-opening, even mind-blowing, recognition and acknowledgment of the bleedin’ obvious . . . but, somewhat of a welcome revelation in that it is articulated by one of Africa’s own leaders . . . .

Well said that man, that President . . .

We, the World, Africa, could do with more like him!!
