Personal accounts of WWI or earlier

Welcome to the Army Rumour Service, ARRSE

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial military website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. Does anyone have any good recommendations for published diaries or collections of diary extracts from soldiers or officers who fought in WWI? The bookshop shelves abound with WWII testimonials but is seems a bit thin on the ground for WWI.

Earlier conflict accounts would also be welcome (Crimea, Boer war, Napoleonics etc).
  2. There's loads from WW1!

    Try these for starters.

'With a Machine Gun to Cambrai' by George Coppard

    'A Subaltern's War' by Charles Edmunds/Carrington
  3. Thanks T_T!
  4. Buy "The war the Infantry Knew" By Captain JC Dunn, A Chronicle of Service in France and Belgium.
