Or, if the daughter was old enough to make the report and know what she was saying, perhaps there was an element of fibbery about it? It's not unknown. :-(

It’s the nuclear option for kids nowadays, especially with step fathers or the mothers boyfriend. They know Dibble has to take it very seriously indeed, despite any reservations they might have about the accuser. The falsely accused man is double damned as even if there is no evidence and the accuser retracts the claim, well, there’s no smoke without fire is there.

I know a guy whose partner had a ten year old girl. The daughter was very bright and inventive. She made up stories about boys bullying her at school. They were clearly inventions, as she eventually admitted. He was paranoid about her making a complaint about him as she didn’t like him much and blamed him for her parents separation and divorce. He ended up only seeing the girlfriend when the kid was at her fathers. You can imagine how long that relationship lasted.

I'm currently doing an OU course in Arts & Humanities, and the first module focuses on "Reputations", so the Princes in the Tower would be relevant in terms of examining sources, propaganda etc., but not at the expense of other important events which are still in living memory.

Which raises another question - when did the generations grow so far apart in terms of understanding of history and what we used to call "general knowledge" ?!

(PS. I reckon Henry VII dun it ;-) )
Spoiler alert! It’s about 35 years ago when I did history at school. Before we had to ditch subjects for GCSE study, and I went for sciences instead.
Despite going to a crap school, I think I was fortunate enough to get a good, liberal, open education. For sure, we had some useless teachers and with a pub over the road, some who would reek of ale in the afternoons. We still had a good library and science block.
You are right, though, we were expected to know things. I talk to kids these days and they know diddly squat, despite being pretty smart. Hey, ho.

I've noticed this over the past couple of decades, even in respectable professions, particularly dentistry, where I used to assist the dental students at Guy's Hospital. They seemed to be expected to focus solely on their professions without any knowledge of other subjects, and most of their handwriting was in a childish script which a 10-year-old would have been ashamed of when I was at school. It seems desperately sad to me that, whilst we are producing and educating top healthcare professionals, their wider understanding of history/geography/music and the arts (to name but a few) seems to fall by the wayside. :-(

At my school you were not allowed to do just one academic stream (maths, physics, chemistry for example). Boys were expected to do three sciences at A Level plus an extra-curricular one (for lack of a better word). Something like English Language, history or a language. (Any boy wanting to do English, History and French was automatically a poof). Girls didn’t count so they could do WTF they liked.

I think the rot set in in the early eighties when people started to proudly announce that “I haven’t read a book since school”. To my generation that is an admission of stupidity.

My grandad didn’t march into Germany in 1918 so kids could be morons!

Has she? How? Surely her message is that the individual can make a difference, and that we all make decisions that impact society and the entire World? We can all make choices like driving less, being sensible when buying food that has been transported half way across the World, not wasting heat...and all these things save you money.
It's not her message though is it?

No. She blames the older generation for ruining her future. Conveniently ignoring those who have have fought and died to give her a voice.

She is autistic and being exploited. Surely she does not simply blame the carbon burning oldies?

The Greens like to sabotage their own message?

Small problem - Sweden was neutral in both World Wars, so her perspective might be different.

What the hell do they study then? I get that earlier centuries produced major changes, industrial revolution being one example, but surely the major conflicts of the 20th century (and more importantly the political situations that prompted/enabled them) are vital to understanding many aspects of the modern world?

Those who ignore history etc. ...
Trouble is, more history happens every day. To include the new stuff means you have to leave out some of the old stuff, which was, of course written by the winners, who may now be the badasses. Or the Badasses are now in Government so history has to be rewritten (as if such a thing could possibly happen)...

few weeks ago:
Right...me brothers just bin arrested , dunno what for...and it’s all over Facebook sayin EE’s a nonce. I’m not avin it..Ees not an I want summat done.

On entering her brothers name and DOB...he’d just been arrested for a serious sexual offence against her own daughter, reported by her daughter.

I wasn’t able to disclose that to her though.

Probably caused a slight amount of cognitive dissonance being torn between the fashionable ‘victimhood’ and ‘kill all nonces’ attitudes.

Going on your last couple of posts, I’ve honestly no idea how you stay sane mate.

Greta thunberg has a lot to answer for.
Namely, the lack of a Swedish Ofsted award for attendance for her school due to the amount of "sickies" she's taken over the last couple of years!

Phone conversation I had the other day (and several other days too)

On 999...

"Riiight worrit iz yeah...(That's the combat indicator for a 'chav call'...Me ex's been callin' me an unfit mutha 'n its all over Facebook...I wannim done"

"So what has he posted?"

"Ee's said me son Kayden had bruises on iz arm last time ee 'ad im 'n Kayden said Kev - me new partner did it..and..me ex's new partner - she's a riiight slag...said I want reporting...and I'm not 'avin it"

"And now she's messaged me threatenin to hit me if she sees me at bingo - it's all over't co-op yer know...well I'm not 'avin it and a bloody told her and..."

"Why don't you just block her on Facebook?"

"Why the feck should a? That means they've won and I'm not bloody avin it"

"Well stop engaging with her on facebook...just don't reply...and don't threaten her back!"

"A yoo bloody listenin t'me? I'ts my facebook an I'm not avin the likes of her forcing me to block her and..if she's got anything to say she can bloody say it to ma face and see what 'appens...and I've bloody told her that too!" "And i've got mental elf yer know...its me anxiety (That's the new PTSD)"

About 10 seconds into the call I put her name and date of birth into the system and see...she's a MARAC victim to all 15 of her last partners the past 2 years, Safeguarding have played a major part in her life since all 4 of her kids were born, and public order / assault charges seem to be her specialist subject. Meanwhile - she'll be showing as 'aggrieved' party in multiple harassment allegations that got filed on first submission.

Next call typically will be an 84 year old woman who's been waiting on 101 for 6 minutes reporting there's a bloke with a torch in her back garden and she's scared...didn't want to phone 999 though as didn't want to be a trouble - in case there were any 'real emergencies'.

I'm not exaggerrating when I say that the above example is pretty typical of 90% of what I have to deal with.

Edit...and due to police having played a major part in most of her adult life and phonecalls chasing up updates on crime numbers (she never has written down)..also stars in about 5-10 999 pocket dials a week due to it being so abundant on her call history/quickdial

That's where our society is at. I can't see it changing...ever.
Are you not allowed to tell the mouth breathers that it's an emergency only line and they can be prosecuted for being useless time wasters?

Are you not allowed to tell the mouth breathers that it's an emergency only line and they can be prosecuted for being useless time wasters?
In most cases it’s quicker to just deal with whatever they phone in with, and a few phone networks don’t allow you to dial 101.

It can be done, but it seems to be very time consuming, and does not stop the problem.

Why on earth do you do that job / volunteer for that Charity ?
( I am fairly sure you have a long RN service time so understand discipline, motivation , reward, loyalty etc )

These cnuts are not going to learn anything from Society, because the Liberal society of the last 50 years has caused this problem.

You, as an individual, don't stand a chance of making any significant difference.

You have done your bit. Don't waste your remaining time on mongs.
The State will only take advantage of your efforts and reward you with a certificate at Endex.
That is a piece of paper.

I wonder what motivates people to dial 999 for trivial reasons? People making mistakes like thinking they are having a heart attack or a witnessing someone being assaulted is one thing, but WTF makes people phone in demanding a taxi or asking for a Pizza?

I imagine emergency call handler is incredibly stressful.

She is not an ‘individual’ as far as the nonesense she promulgates and the way that it is propagated. She is an easy broadcast media story for too many lazy broadcasters and the unwashed nobheads who are shouting at the wrong people. She is purely the corporate ident (nowadays called a ‘logo’).
With confidence I can say that Geta is tool.
Many have called me a tool for vastly different reasons will continue do so. That is their right. Unless they are wrong. Which is often.

Because it's not trivial to them. It's incredibly important.
