Paul Scofield

The BBC reports that Paul Scofield has passed away. IMHO one of the true greats of British theatre and film. I can recall seeing him many years ago on stage performing the role of Sir Thomas More in "A Man for All Seasons" and later seeing him in the same role on film.

A nice writeup on BBC Clicky
It was his performance in a 'Man for all Seasons' coupled with the brilliant script of Robert Bolt that caused me to seek further information on Sir Thomas More.

I eventually bought the script of the film for the engaging exchange between More and Cromwell during the court scene.

As for Mr Schofield, I feel that the following could equally describe him :

More is a man of an angel's wit and singular learning; I know not his fellow. For where is the man of that gentleness, lowliness and affability? And as time requireth a man of marvellous mirth and pastimes; and sometimes of as sad gravity: a man for all seasons. (Robert Whittinton 1520)

Mrs Baldy met him on a number of occasions a few years ago.
She said he was charming & not in the least bit a 'luvvie'.
