Compensate Lee Clegg!

Thats pathetic! How can convicted murderers and sex offenders recieve compensation for things like not being able to have hardcore porn in their cells whilst a soldier who was (thankfully wrongly) convicted simply because he felt his and others lives were in danger recieve nothing!

It is pleasing to see though that the promotions board has seen common sense and not held him back because of it!

Awaiting incoming from this but what the heck

Sgt Clegg, now 36, was said to be "angry and confused" after receiving a letter from the Northern Ireland Office last month
Thats situation normal for a Para isn't it

This comes as no surprise. BBC NI gave lots of airtime in the past week to various Republicans spouting about Bobby Sands and how the British had criminalised Catholics and Republicans (well, yes - they were terroristsm which is criminal); there was no rebuttal or explanation other than one interview with a retired unionist politician who kept getting interrupted. Bliar's government are allowing history to be rewritten.

Clegg will need the likes of Michael Mansfield QC.

The Guildford Four were innocent and deserved the cash. Lee Clegg likewise. I hope he wins the appeal
You shouldn't believe everything you read in the papers.

Quite right, there were four of them.
Quite right, Lee Clegg deserves compensation.
Quite right, I hope he wins the appeal.

That's all.

At the risk of starting a flame war, I think the phrase you are all looking for is "got away with it"...

To quote the judgement from 2000 ( http://www.guardian.co.uk/Northern_Ireland/Story/0,2763,190513,00.html) ;

"The judgment said: "In these circumstances we consider that the evidence upon which the conviction has to stand is frail and gives rise to an element of doubt in our minds whether it is being sufficiently clearly proved that the appellant did discharge a shot after the car when it had passed his position." The judgment attacked the "highly discreditable behaviour" of the paratroopers who were "undoubtedly guilty" of the shootings." "

Be honest, if they had belonged to any other unit than Paras, would the PR campagain for his release have been so successful (or even have been mounted)?

Also, legal decisions are not pick and mix. If you accept the decisions of the courts enough to accept their right to release Lee Clegg or anybody else, you have to accept the right of the court to decide if any compensation is due. If you think the court is wrong with one decision, you call into question the other.

I'm now retiring into my nuclear bunker, I'll peep out when I hear the "all clear"!

The difference between the 'innocent' guildford 4 and Clegg is that everyone knows clegg shot someone and the police are not looking for anyone else as regards the guildford bombing. Innocent my arrse !!!!

Exile, the reason the police are not looking for anyone else for the Guilford bombing is that the Balcombe Street gang admitted to it after they were caught. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/315216.stm

Get your facts straight before you post

Anyway, what has people being framed in Guilford or anywhere else to do with a refusal to pay compensation on an entirly diffrent case?

Why are they allowed to see the light of day again? pity they hadn't been jailed in the USA the would have at least been give 99 years each.I think Lee Clegg should be paid compensation if he had been a terrorist the first thing he would have been given when released was a load of dosh.Just like all of Gerrys' friends and relatives.
