Para Reg transferring to Royal Signals (CS Engineer)

Good evening ladies and gents! Question time.

As it stands, I'm currently serving in Para Reg as a full screw, however I am looking to make the jump to Royal Signals as a CS Engineer. However, I am wondering:

A) Am I likely to retain my rank throughout re-trading in Phase 2 and post phase 2?
B) Am I going to get treated like complete crow bag once I'm at Blandford?
C) Does anyone know of many blokes that has come across to Sigs from a Infantry background and got on well with it?

Cheers gents.

216 will be calling you.

I'm REME so can't comment on the signal specific stuff but there is ex infantry everywhere in the corps, you won't be treated like a crow, you'll be treated like a screw. Just don't come across with the Reg mentality that your better than everyone else.

Yes. No. Loads. You'll be fine, just remember to wear your capbadge over your ear and give it rock all like you own the gaff like the hat crowbags and you'll fit right in. Good luck, bold move

Will you be halo'ing in?

We've had a fair few transferees to CSE and most have got what they wanted from it.

You should retain sub rank. I've not known any drop even from Cpl. It also helps we have lots of vacancies at Cpl CSE.

Blandford will try to treat you as a Cpl. But obviously you'll occasionally be pulled in on utter b*llocks along with the ph2s.

Give me a pm if you want any more info.

Cheers for the replies gents.

Tired_Tech, I've just sent you a PM.

PapaGolf, bring on them scaley lizards! Hahaha

Also gents, another quick fire question. What is the route like going from CSE branching out into the Cyber Security aspect of the job?

I retraded from the RA to REME along with a lot of other blokes, Para, Inf, plenty of them. All of us kept rank but suffered on seniority, plus there were a fair few arguments about AIP (I was a class 1 CP Ack in the RA), when I passed as a class 1 tech in the REME I got told I wasn't entitled to the pay rise where the rest of my course were. Things got a bit shouty.

I retraded with existing rank(albeit in the same Corps) years ago, and also was an instructor at Blandford.

You'll keep your rank, and remain Para Regt until the day you pass the course. If you fail, you will be RTU'd to Para Regt. The day you pass, you get your Jimmy & stable belt. That way, the Corps isn't stuck with a badged, but untrained soldier that can't be employed. There was an RMP full screw on my basic course, she wore her red beret and RMP cap badge. I've taught plenty of infantry, engineers, arty etc all on retrade courses.

As Tired_tech says, the DS at Blandford will treat you as fairly as they can (bear in mind that the upgrading courses are entirely fullscrews, and they have to do all the marching, stupid parades for ruler writers etc).

If anything, the retrades/rebadges were above average. Presumably because they're a bit older in general, and possibly more motivated. They've seen a lot more of the Army and think "I want to do that, not this". The straight recruits don't have that luxury and pick a trade, not really knowing if it's for them or not. Hence the posts on here about "1st choice RLC Driver, 2nd choice CSE, oh, and I want to see action".

Sounds to me like you'll be fine. Best of luck!

Fugly - Seems like you've been seen off a bit there mate.

Roadster280 - I'm glad you hear that you keep your stripes and your cap badge whilst re-trading at Blandford. Bit of a pride thing for me, but I'm sure once I'm in the mix of things, it will get better. Have the blokes been happy that they've retraded from the Inf?

Like you said mate, I'm generally a lot more motivated to re-trade, I will just treat it like any other course in the Army, despite the sh'ite that often comes with it. I'm proud that I've been Para Reg, but being Para Reg on civvie street is no use. Plus my interests have changed.

Does anyone know what Sigs unit deals with the cyber security / Information Assurance side of things in the Army? If so, is it possible for someone to go straight into that line of work from Phase 2?

Cheers again gents.

I'm too long out to comment on the Cyber part in the Corps. I believe there are some AR specialist units for it at Corsham.

The retrades I met were generally happy. The only negative was that they had lost time in their new trades. If say you retrade after 5 years' service, you've effectively got 17 years in trade to get to WO1, not 22. Not a biggie, the good ones will get through regardless, but it was one of the reasons I binned the Army. I was too old compared with my peers. I didn't pass out of my T3 until I was 24. 6 years older than my peers and in those days, it mattered. You had to get to WO1 and commission by 40 if you were going to. If you didn't, you were out. I'd not want to be changing careers at 40. I think those rules have changed now though.

Now I'm 48 and couldn't give a shit :)

It has changed - the Age based promotion system is dead for 'new' people, and it is now based on reports in rank.

Essentially system was found to be 'age-ist' agains late joiners, re-treads and so on, and therefore discriminatory. There was a mechanism for moving people over a while ago, but haven't had to do promotion stuff for a couple of years now, hopefully that will change come next year.

You seem like a switched on cookie, go for it marra. Any ex Para Reg I've encountered have done well upon transfer and don't go cutting about calling people hats. Good luck in the Corps.

There are those who seem to revel in the particular phrase 'craphat' for those who haven't done P Coy.

Fair play to them who have but don't go around labelling us mere mortals as hats.

You bellends.

You seem a bit touchy about being called a hat. Were you too scared to attempt an arduous course, and subsequently hold your manhood cheap? It's ok to admit it here, no one will judge you.

Maybe he didn't want to be a brainwashed fucktard. Did you not fancy transferring into the Parachute Regiment rather than hang off their jacket tails like shiteballs on a sheeps arse
