Operational deployments Post Afghanistan

#1
what with the wind down in Afghan and Iraq, what are people's thoughts on the chances of deploying operationally with the reserves in the future??

I'm ex RN and when I was in we were basically doing a 6 month deployment, 7 months in Pompey for post deployment leave, pre deployment training then another 6 months away.

With the exception of TOSCA what other opportunities for reserves are there??

There are deployments on-going, but whether or not you go depends on your branch/trade.

I expect the aspiration that 10% will be Reserves will endure?

Rather unsurprisingly given the significant additional costs involved for no benefit now that tour intervals are no longer an issue.
So nothing to do with medals then ;)

Nope. All to do with cold hard cash. The significant amount of extra money for a TA TOSCA could just about be justified on the basis of helping regular units get back to harmony guidelines, balance the demands etc.

Spend the extra while regular Coys/Sqns sit in barracks with no Op cycle to manage? Not for much longer.

Well seeing as CGS has just overturned the whole FR2020 plan and stated that AR will only be used for national emergencies I suspect they are limited

Overturned it? No - just made some statements of the blindingly obvious to anyone with half a brain.

You don't call in contractors on massive rates of pay unless you don't have the manpower in house or need specialist skills. Neither of those apply to stagging on and creating G1 dramas in Cyprus.

It would be better if you use an ellipsis rather than a comma to imply a deliberately incomplete sentence; without it people may think you have clicked 'Post Reply' prematurely.

Defence writing is no joke fatty.
