Opening Rar Files

Discussion in 'Gaming and Software' started by Mattb, Apr 4, 2013.

Welcome to the Army Rumour Service, ARRSE

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial military website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. Someone's sent me a .rar file and I want to open it - anyone got any recommendations of which program to use?
  2. IIRC recent versions of Winzip* have that facility.

    * Other software compression programmes are available.
  3. Don't you have to pay for that though?

WinRAR is freeware. WinZip can get a bit weird when fiddling with trial vs full licenses.
  5. It's not freeware. It just doesn't force you to pay.

    There's a (moral) difference. :p

edit:- It's a great (un) archiver.
  6. Most stuff on Cnet is good, if look at the bottom of the page there are alternatives, both free and paid for.
  7. OK, cheers!

But if it breaks my computer-machine, then I'll find out where you live and then come round and poo on your car/mum/flowerbeds/cat (whichever I see first).
  8. 7zip all the way.

It's free and the best compression software to boot.

  11. Thanks chaps - the CNET one didn't work, so I went with 7Zip and it seems to be fine.
