OP Banner - The Gunners contribution

What about L/Bdr Sheapard 89/90

Have you got any more details than that ? Unit, tour location, first name ?

The original list was from NIVETS IIRC

Edited to add:

Found him

Lance Bombadier DAVID OSBORNE SHEPPARD

24713593, Royal Regiment of Artillery
Who died, age 20, on 18 March 1989
Cause of death unknown.
Laid to rest at METHODIST CHURCH, STANHOPE, BISHOP AUCKLAND, COUNTY DURHAM.

The cause of death is strange, anyone more details ? I am wondering if he wasn't killed due to terrorist action so didn't make the orignial list. I will add unless told otherwise, as to me a dead gunner is a lost brother no matter the cause.

Found some more info

LBdr David Sheppard 32 Regt RA. Died in Armagh City, Northern Ireland, 18th March 1989

Stilll no actual cause, main list changed to reflect his loss

Northern Ireland Veterans' Association Annual Service of Remembrance
National Memorial Arboretum
11.30am, Saturday, 22nd September 2012

This year’s service will be held at 11.30am on Saturday 22nd September 2012 at the National Memorial Arboretum, Alrewas, Staffordshire.
The service will commemorate and remember all those who lost their lives in service of the Crown as a result of the conflict in N. Ireland.
The service will be followed by a parade down to the Ulster Ash Grove for the laying of wreaths.

Following the laying of the wreaths, there will be a 15 minute pause before the parade forms up for the return march to the visitor centre during which the guest of honour will take the salute.

The service is open to all and all Associations are welcome to parade their standards. It would be appreciated if Associations arranging for groups of their members to attend could notify us of numbers and confirm if their standard will be parading.

We look forward to welcoming you to our annual memorial service.

I was just reading about Northern Ireland on another website. But reading about the place always reminds me of school. L/Bombadier Stephen Cummins KIA in 89. Land mine which killed two. Never knew him but knew his mum. She was a receptionist at my school who always had time for the kids and their problems, especially my daft issues.
School hall at morning assembly was never so quiet when told.
Old memory but not forgotten I'd thought id post.

As you are probably well aware, tomorrow night marks the end of our most protracted engagement, Op Banner, what is less known is the sacrifice that members of the Royal Regiment have made during the period, even today when people asked where I have served and I say "Northern Ireland" they look at me confused as say "Did we use artillery in Ireland ?" We have the auspicious honour of having the first casualty as well as the last of the conflict and with 57 casualties the highest amount for a single cap badge outside the UDR/RIR.

Whether it was on patrol or drinking in the Kings Arms, everyone a hero and sorely missed

I would like to make special mention to

14/05/1994 L/Cpl David Wilson Keady Armagh Bomb

"Jock" Wilson, although not a gunner but a loggie was the only death I endured after 4 tours in the province

We will remember them
I remember Jock Wilson nice guy,I was in Middletown when it happened and we heard the blast from Keady, was an awful night.

Spent a very wet two weeks in 1980 attached to 19 Field in Fermanagh. At that stage we were engaged in Op Fortress and we were dug in overlooking Clones. Happy days and a good time spent with some very convivial Gunners.

I was REME attached to both 25 Regt and later 4 Regt, first in Londonderry and then with 4th in Belfast, North Queen st RUC station. My respects to all the lads that gave all.

9th Battery of which Regiment? please excuse my ignorance but I was in Derry attached to 25 in early 72 so I am curious.

9 (Plassey) Battery, 12 RA.

Via fb op banner photo group , i wanted to do a quick search for Gunner Cutting , killed in NI 1972. Think his unit was 29 cdo regt (RA). Following his dads tradition of RM service.
As a side note I homed in on a gunner Raistorick from 1972 from the list on page 1 of this post. I remember gnr Roistorick killed on the border 1993

Apologies for not being able to help with your enquiry.

Just thought I'd suggest posting it in this thread if you haven't already.

Best of luck with your search.

The same name as the last Soldier killed in NI. Stephen Raistorick. Were they related I wonder?
