The 2°RH used to be a conventional recce unit equipped with AMX-10 RC but since the 2000s it has been converted into an Intel gathering unit. The basic combat element is the deep recce patrol (PRP) composed of 2 VBLs and 6 soldiers.
It is seen as a specialized but not a special unit. As a specialized unit it has access to some specific kit, thus its field teams had FNH SCAR L rifles, Glock pistols and HK 69 GL when other conventional units still used FAMAS and PAMAS pistols.
The 2°RH sports a brown beret with a hungarian knot under the cavalry insignia which is sometimes worn in a roundel or can also be embroidered. Brown was the regimental colour during Napoleonic times. It is the only regiment to wear that colour in the French forces.

The FRA MoD had refuted the information. It has said that the bombing was preceded by a long target development phase
It looks like more and more Taliban TTPs are being imported to Mali. In AFG every other Op led to claims of a school/creche/hospital/wedding having been bombed....
That'll come as a shock to ouest-France and the majority of Breton media.

As some of us have gathered from our tours in dusty sh1tholes of the world, it is always a wedding party.
Never an RV of armed terrorists, a bus/lorry queue or a group of blokes with weapons in a pre-attack update.
Far more emotive a description for the consumption of the media and chattering classes of the world to discuss and rage at.
(If we could just ban weddings instead, would that perhaps stop all these bombings?)

SVBIED against an Op Barkhane VBCI yesterday.
According to the below article, the VBCI saw a vehicle approaching an element it was tasked to protect. It placed itself between the attacker and the rest of the detachment, taking the full force of the blast.
