FDNY Chaplain Resigns After Remarks About 9/11 Conspiracy Theory

NEW YORK (AP) -- The fire department's Muslim chaplain abruptly resigned Friday after saying in a published interview that a conspiracy, not 19 al-Qaida hijackers, may have been responsible for the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

"It became clear to him that he would have difficulty functioning as an FDNY chaplain," Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta told reporters an hour before Imam Intikab Habib was to be officially sworn in. "There has been no prior indication that he held those views."

Habib told Newsday that he was skeptical of the official version of the attack on the World Trade Center, which killed 343 members of the Fire Department of New York. The newspaper published the interview hours before the swearing-in ceremony Friday.

"It takes two or three weeks to demolish a building like that. But it was pulled down in a couple of hours," Habib told the newspaper. "Was it 19 hijackers who brought it down, or was it a conspiracy?"

The 30-year Guyana native joined the department as chaplain on Aug. 15 after the FDNY's Islamic Society recommended him for the part-time position, which pays $18,000 a year.

Scoppetta said Habib, who was educated in Islamic law in Saudi Arabia and preaches at a New York mosque, had appeared qualified and passed a background check.

"It's sad," said Kevin James, a spokesman for the Islamic Society of Fire Department Personnel. "We had no idea those were his views. He's entitled to his opinion but he's not the right person for the chaplain."
  2. I look forward to the FDNY dismissing any personnel who supported Irish Republican Terrorism.

    Not holding my breath.

  3. A Muslim Chaplin? :?

    What Atheist Padre?!
  4. FDNY is lucky he resigned. If they tried to fire him he could take them to the cleaners for violation of his First Amendment rights.

    Fcuking conspiracy theorists.
  5. You all laugh, but he'll be over here soon spouting his boll*cks. And probably earning a fortune off the government too.
  6. i'll admit looking at evidence from various reputable sources, rather than those who have watched to much x files, i have had my doubts for some time about 9/11.

Even if this wasn't the case he's stuck to his believes and i have a lot of respect for that. Fair play to him he has a believe has stuck to it and has done the morally right thing to do, in reference to that believe.
  7. I frequently have a drink with a civil engineer of high standing. He has always said that the opinion in the 'Trade' was that no one belived an aircraft crashing into a modern skyscraper would bring it down.
However the fire redartent mesures taken on the towers where just not up to dealing with an aircraft with an almost full load of fuel.
Mind you same guy says that the twinn towers would never have been allowed to be built with the methods used, in any other country of high professional standards.
  8. Jonwilly, You've hit the nail on the head.

No one seems to know why the towers came down so fast, yet at the same time everyone admits that the idea of a plane, as big as a passenger liner, full of fuel was never before used in the design.

You've all seen the pictures, on one of the hits it looks like ALL of 3 -5 floors are blown out by the fireball. And all of the plane pretty much goes inside the structure.

When one came down, I recken IMHO, that the other was sure to come down.
  9. No surprise, given your stated location

  10. Ah Froggy
I am told that the towers where built with a central "concrete" core containing the lift shafts and utilities and a outer steet Framework of girders, which was prefabricated off site. This allowed very fast construction saving big money on labour and getting revenue coming in soon.
The inner and the outer where joined by Trusses.
A girder is what the Forth railway bridge was built with and it's strong. Very Heavy, exspensive, old hat and heat resistant.
A truss is constructed from lightweight steel rods/bars and is light, cheaper, strong if designed well, modern but need specialist protection to keep heat away from steel componats. Trusses are very vunerable to heat and as they have considerably less metal in them will suffer before a comparable girder supporting same wieght/load.
They are a fire safety risk waiting to happen.
No one expected that sort of heat as generated by 1000's of gallons of aviation fuel.
The truses deformed with heat and the outer walls where pulled in and the thousands of tons above did the job, each failing floor accelerating the speed of the collapse.
  11. And what exactly makes a chaplain, with no formal training in architecture or demolitions, an expert on the destruction of the Twin Towers.
It seams to me that we now have a “special” group of people who have watched the “fahrenheit 9/11” DVD a few too many times and now think they know the truth about what happened.
  12. Fahrenheit 9/11 didn't imply a conspiracy, it just showed capitalisation on what was a very tragic event.....At least that's the way I saw it, I may have just completely missed the point though.
  13. where does it say that he wasnt an architecte or dems expert before becoming a man of the cloth?
  14. It’s probably safe to assume that if he were an architect or a demolitions expert then that would have been reported.
It would have added more credibility to what he said and the article.
  15. There was a very good CH4 Prog a couple of years back which went into how the Twin Towers collapsed so quickly. All down to the peculiarities of construction and rather mundane I'm afraid.
