old knacker fitness

Hi all,

I joined the RLC national TA at the end of last year. Due to work and personal stuff I've had to defer starting my training until next year. In the meantime, I'm trying to get myself as fit as I can. I'm an old git (41) and am struggling a little. I can do the 1.5 mile run in around 11.30, which I'm told is good enough for the fitness test at the end of the training (could be wrong but was told under 12 mins is the time for over 40's) but would like to get it down to below 11.

I work abroad in a hugely hot country so am limited to running on a treadmill, weights, exercise bike and swimming, Can anyone point me towards a fitness routine that will help me? I can manage the gym 3-4 times a week and was expecting to be a lot fitter than I actually am by now.
