A top Muslim official has denounced what he called the extensive backwardness of the Islamic world.
Abdelwahed Belkeziz - Secretary General of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC) - made the stinging attack at meeting in Turkey.

He blamed the rise of Muslim extremism on the feeling of "powerlessness" felt by members of the Islamic world.

The meeting also heard a statement from UN chief Kofi Annan calling for Islamic support for Iraq's government.
So being backward, repressed , disenfranchised and feeling like a 3rd class citizen, can give rise to extremist behaviour?

Well, who knew ?

Congratulations to that man, I doubt many of his audience were pleased to hear his comments but it needed to be said by a muslim, to muslims.

Whilst most religions have managed to move with the times, Islam remains firmly rooted in the medieval past. The powerbase of many Islamic clerics and governments is predicated upon keeping Muslims in the middle ages in many aspects of their lives. What worries them about the West is that their people may see that God has not in fact caused widespread destruction of Christians because they allow women to go to school, drive and be seen; no thunderbolts result from westerners listening to music or drinking alcohol; and divine retribution is not visited upon infidels who have just enjoyed a bacon sarnie or a bag of pork scratchings.

Things will not change until political power is disassociated with religion.

Being repressed and treated like a 3rd class citizen has become the norm under the Dear Leader's regime - thank goodness the backward are only interested in football! :)

President Mussharref of Pakistan said a similar thing several years ago, just after seizing power. He stated that (in my words, not his) 'Blow this for a lark. I'm sick of us all living in glorified mud huts, marrying our sisters and having zero industry. Let's get some bloody moderniseation in here'.
So he did. And the religious freaks hate him for it.

islam used to be the progressive religion, mohammed did say go forth and learn all you can and improve on all knowledge.
we owe the muslim a debt as the translated and preserved roman surgical knowledge, texts, science and legends from the greeks and we got it by proxy off the arabs.
at some point there was a power shift and it went downhill from there
