Officers £130m Patten pension

Aimed at getting rid of any remaining RUC as I understand it thru a friend,

More than £130m in special payments is to be given to police officers retiring in the next two years, according to figures obtained by the BBC.

The one-off payment was negotiated as part of the review into NI policing, completed in 2001 by former Hong Kong governor Chris Patten.

He was brought in to reform the RUC as part of the Good Friday Agreement.

Figures for the next two years show 1,100 officers will receive pensions at a cost of £132m.

This includes around 700 police officers who will receive around £88m.

'£500,000 pay-off'

Just over 400 full-time reserve officers will also leave at an estimated cost of £44m.

BBC NI's home affairs correspondent Vincent Kearney said the Patten reforms included "a generous retirement package that encouraged thousands of long-serving officers to leave and make room for new recruits, 50% of whom have to be Catholic".

He added: "Around 4,500 have already left the police since the scheme was introduced in January 2001, and the total cost is expected to be well over half a billion pounds."

It is understood the average one-off payment to a constable is £95,000, while some senior officers have been given up to £500,000.

The DUP's policing board member Ian Paisley Jnr claimed the PSNI has been "robbed of experienced officers".

"We're stripping the police of experienced and skilled officers at a critical time and we're creating a situation where we're spending hundreds of millions of pounds getting rid of experienced officers and then saying we don't have the budget. It does not add up."

The SDLP, which helped negotiate the policing reforms, said it was "a price worth paying".

Policing spokesman Alex Attwood said 26% of police officers are now Catholic, compared to 8% of RUC officers.

"We now have a situation where we're not that short of having a truly representative and fully accountable police service," he said.

"There's been a heavy price to pay in the loss of officers and the cost, but it's entirely priceless that we have in the north now the police service that has the support across the political parties and the community."

Don't worry they will be announcing the PIRA Retirement Package (with backpay) in the next few years. If they base it on the Army Pension they will all be claiming to be at least Brigadiers, just like the old days.

Fair play to those who have got/are getting Patten. Bit of cutting the nose off to spite the face on behalf of a lot of our politicians here mind you. Much was made after the Northern Bank robbery and recent terrorist activity about how the PSNI didn't pick up on these beforehand. Funny that. Guess it's what happens when you insist on getting rid of the source of the majority of your intelligence (touts). Also we now have a dearth of policing experience, naturally acquired through seniority and time on the job. Have we now a force representative of the community? Could be argued that yes, we do. (Bearing in mind that not all prods are unionists and vice versa.). Do we have a force seriously lacking in knowledge and experience. Yes, we do. I just wish I had another 15 years reckonable service right now :D

I may well have been unlucky or in wrong place wrong time but I recollect a lot of uniformed officers who piled up the hours and overtime monies and never even went out of the barracks. It'll be that generation off with these golden riot helmets

OldRedCap,
To be fair, many of the same generation would have been at the sharp end of things during some of the worst years. The hunger strikes, Anglo Irish Agreement, Drumcree to name just a few events anyone with 25+ years service is likely to have served during. Even the office dwellers still had to live, socialise and move about off duty in the community. A great many of that generation were murdered and maimed off duty. The scumbags didn't differentiate between a staff officer and a DMSU bod. Literally hundreds disowned by friends and family, burned out of homes, wives and kids brought up to lie to neighbours and constant looking over the shoulder and under the car. Deserve every penny of it of any payment given to them.

I was careful to condition it as some barrack huggers only. I will await some mention of 'useless soldiers' and then let you see the nominal roll of soldiers killed in defence of something they did not start with the old B Special running amok.

The old B Specials may have or not "run amok"as you assert, however the list of soldiers killed also include over 360 members of the U.D.R. a regiment you,on another thread, chose to misname, the majority off whom didn't start anything, were not barrack huggers, and unlike the "Regulars" lived and have had to live here 365 through out all the "Troubles".Just as the police have had to do. At least the civvie police didn't have to look over their shoulders for the Rob My Pay.
