Officer Sniper.

#1
Ok, me and my brother are joining the Army, me as a regular in the Int Corps, and my Brother as a Officer, however he seems to have this feeling that he can speacilaise as a sniper, however im rather iffy about this, I know our officers used to be able to train as a sniper but if i was in a platoon and my officer was a sniper i would feel rather relcutant as he would be more focused on getting a good shot than actually organising his team.

But i also read somwhere that they are allowed to but are higlhy discouraged to do so, can anyone verify this?

Many Thanks.

He may command the relevant group and possibly gain a heavy insight into each role within but not specialise.
You will be their to command, organise and administrate fit to your role.

I think that officers are indeed discouraged from Sniping as they are trained for leadership or technical roles rather than specialising in something like Sniping.

Happy to be corrected of course.

might get on a course.
won't be employed as one very handy to have somebody in the command loop who understands what they can and as importantly what they can't do.
but roaming around dropping terry from 1000metres away no not going to happen :(

any he will have a much more deadly weapon than a sniper rifle on issue.

a MAP AND A GOOD IDEA

Way back, QUEENS had a number of officer snipers who were employed as snipers. Don't recall there being any problem with this. Maybe because they were very effective on roof at Flax St!

Speaking of which, just how good is this new design in defeating obeservation systems? Looks pretty pants for defeating the Mk1, but who knows.

Funnily enough this rang a bell and I remembered where I'd read it:

Obiturary in the National Rifle Association Journal:
Major HN Cooper RM (Retd)
1926-2009
........
RM 1944, Commissioned 1946, MiD 1951 (Malaya), "huge enthusiasm for shooting (lead to) postings to the RM Small Arms School......"
November 1956, Port Said (40 Cdo) "...was commanding Support Troop and armed with his sniper rifle, he went forward to see how the situation was progressing and whether his heavy weapons were required...."

Of course back then the sniper rifle was little more than the service rifle with a scope on it but as he was a very proficient marksman it would make sense for him to carry one rather than the standard item.

Far from up to date but I thought it might be of interest.

Quite so, although a sniper rifle might be more effective than a dagger in the back, for our more toxic colleagues?
