Officer or Soldier?

Hi all,

I am currently a University student but have my heart on joining the Army post degree. I have been advised by multiple people to apply for an officer role but I want to experience a soldier role whilst I am young and able and also don’t want as much responsibility as i

Do officers get less leisure time than soldiers as I want to compete in military boxing whilst serving - would it be viable to compete as an officer if I get less time to train?
I would love to become a Dog Handler but understand that it is very hard to get into with no formal handling experience and there is not a huge career progression available - would I be able to transfer after a few years to a different regiment?
I have also looked at the Signals and think I would love that and it appears to be a position the army is actively recruiting for.

I plan to join regardless but I have seen a few bursary schemes for current university students - does anyone have any more info on this?

I know there is a fair bit of info there but any tips or advice would be appreciated!!

Have you considered joing the UOTC while you're at university? If nothing else, it'll give you the chance to socialise, earn some money, and have at bit of a sniff at army life without committing yourself to anything.

Join the local Army Reserve as a soldier, then get a better feel for how the Army operates and is structured. If you fancy the soldier route as a post grad, consider the Intelligence Corps.

May I kindly suggest that you read through this forum for earlier posts as your officer or soldier question is a common one and has been asked dozens of times. The advice given there will more than likely be applicable to you also and is just as likely to be repeated here.
