Hello,
I was just wondering if officers can gain specialist roles such as bomb disposal and diver.

Thank you for your time,
Hariet
Though with a name like Hariet, Diver may be out for you.

When I was at 33, there were two female Bomb Disposal Officers (BDOs). One was outstanding, one was cr@p. Same as with blokes, really. If that's the route you want to go, there's nothing stopping you.

The first two female BDO's to do the course came through DEODS when I was there. I passed one at fuze imm and failed the other. The one that passed was RAF. The one that failed wasn't.

What about the Asst Adj in the 80's that appeared in Penthouse! All those Sappers rushing off into Strood to buy a copy only to find out it was about women in dangerous jobs, fully clothed! Mind you she was a looker, unlike the munter who replaced her!

Op Crabstick 1989 Eastleigh Airport, the press turn up and the Sun interviewed a Sapper.
SSM walks in to the O..O...O...OC (see what I did there!) and says "Sir The Telegraph want to interview a Sapper". OC replies "I'm not having a Sapper in the Telegraph, I'll do it" (took him longer to get the words out than that) then he and Asst Adj go out. She gets photographed walking up and down a pile of earth with a bit of pipe on her shoulder and the Telegraph tell the world how she single handedly cleared Eastleigh Airport of pipemines!

So Yes, women can do everything in the REs, even on their own!

The contrast between the two female BDOs I served with in 99/00 couldn't be starker. One of them went through full NBC de-contamination in front of the lads without a moment's hesitation. The other refused to do it but was only to happy to stand around and watch the lads go through. Result: instant respect for one, instant bitching about the other. Top tip: if you're not willing to do something that you expect your No.2 and Sappers to do, don't become a BDO!

No it wasn't. She was WRAC/R Sigs.

And for the rest of you: no more links to NSFW websites.
