Odd Convoy

Travelling down A34 (Southbound), approx 1430, I noticed two white fleet LWB transits/ivecos with blacked out windows driven by guys in CS95 wearing PRR, then in front a bizarre armoured MoD plod wagon with a SatCom head, then two more green armoured wagons (almost like Merc security wagons), two artics with hard covered trailers (all olive), a MoD Plod Galaxy then two more green armoured trucks (again like securicor types) and at the front another od these MoD Plod armoud trucks with SatCom.

I'm making a huge presumption that there were people (an RF?) in the LWB white fleet vehicles, but what these odd MoD Plod vehicles where I've never seen them before...any ideas?

Yes..I know its dull, but after 6 hours of driving it woke me up!

They used to have pretty heavily escorted convoys for moving bullion or currency in bulk not so long ago! If it was southbound on the A34 it could be a load of currency printed for a foreign country or even Cameron selling off the rest of our gold, the price has just hit a record $1500 per ounce!

I can, thanks to Google, possibly answer my own question - I think it was MoD Plod SEG, the two green armoured units were definitely MacNeillie Mercedes Protected Patrol Vehicles. Given they were headed South down the A34, a trip to AWE might make this all add up.

Never knew they existed, always assumed a unit like FPGRM would handle these taskings. Every day is a school day.

Wow, spot on, same vehicles, same convoy layout (minus the two LWB whitefleets), if I'd had the time to take a closer look I'd have perhaps noted the odd aerials on the artics but the drivers of the green armoured were playing fully defensively.

Again, you live and learn, I'd always assumed these moves would be done at night - less traffic, less risk of an accident and less opportunity for surveillance.

I saw the exact same mob on Sunday heading North up the M6. I assumed they were foreigners, possibly krauts due to the Mercs.

I was curious (the satcom equipped blue armoured MoD plod vehicle piqued my curiosity) and so I (stupidly) drew closer and then one of the green wagons leapt out but a tad slowly so I ended up alongside and saw all the MoD Plod markings and his uniform.

My first thought was some kind of TSG/SWAT team, then I saw the rest.....

They were heading the other way from me so I only caught a glimpse.

Guys I can 100% confirm this is a Nuclear Convoy, without giving too much away I was based up in the NE and they stay overnight at that location. The MOD Police run the whole security backed up by Royal Marines when/if needed. The routes vary obviously as does the number of vehicles and sometimes even dummy runs are carried out.

The biggest problem they faced (dunno if it still is) was CND nutcases chaining themselves to the vehicles as they moved through slow traffic etc.

An overnight stay at my location once resulted in around 150 said activists trying to get in the front gate, never has a pick handle been used to such good effect!!

I'd bore you all with tales of my time at AWE, and Burghfield, but I can't be arrsed.

Haha, no, that wasn't me. I was in the building across the road from the restaurant, mostly.

A2 Matelot, PEV not PPVs (Protected Escort Vehicle) and they run day or night, running during night hours only would cost too much in MoD SEG overtime!

baldricksdad, if you were in a position to give a 100% confirmation, maybe some of your gen is still sensitive? Fair do's some of the info can be found on Nukewatch etc but if you were in a position from the inside, best keep it that way ;-)

whatnow, thats called 'the wrecker'

Smudge. Whos manning the gate now youve gone?

Is their any reason these convoys are so visable? Verification, visual tracking? I would have thought it would be safer to run them in psudo M+S trucks with a "national express" coach or two trailing.
