  1. Senegal offers land to Haitians that want to come

DAKAR, Senegal -- Senegal is offering free land to Haitians wishing to "return to their origins" following this week's devastating earthquake, which has destroyed the capital and buried thousands of people beneath rubble.

Senegal's octogenarian President Abdoulaye Wade told a meeting of his advisers that Haitians are the sons and daughters of Africa, because the country was founded by slaves, including some believed to have come from Senegal.

"The president is offering voluntary repatriation to any Haitian that wants to return to their origin," said Wade's spokesman Mamadou Bemba Ndiaye late Saturday following the president's announcement.

"Senegal is ready to offer them parcels of land - even an entire region. It all depends on how many Haitians come. If it's just a few individuals, then we will likely offer them housing or small pieces of land. If they come en masse we are ready to give them a region," he said.

He stressed that Wade had insisted that if a region is handed over it should be in a fertile area - not in the country's parched deserts.

Senegal, a nation of 14 million roughly the size of South Dakota, is considered one of the most stable and developed in the sub-region. Still nearly half of working-age adults are unemployed and the country has been burdened by high food prices, frequent blackouts and spiraling energy costs.

Many have criticized Wade for being a dreamer, proposing lofty projects that do little to alleviate poverty or address endemic corruption. Others see him as a statesman who dares to have a vision for Africa.

  2. Let's hope that this sort of thinking catches on.

  3. No doubt Cyclops will nick the idea.

  4. did President add in an apology for originally capturing and selling the Haitians forebears too?

  5. He doesnt need to, Brown will do that part willingly ...

  6. Just seen the amounts pledged from Uk/Europe/Tiwan/Korea and the makers of CocaCola running at a total of $ 623 million so far.

Sounds like a lot of cash but its only $ 68 a head (well, less the 200,000 who have pegged it

Still puts into perspective how fukced the place must be.

  7. When I saw the thread title I was certain the moronic Brown had 'taken charge' of the rescue and re-building operations.

  8. Frying pan into the fire?

  9. Sad as the situation in Haiti is, relief efforts and the 'rebuilding' of the country will not solve the problem of 9 million people trying to live on only 10,700 square miles of land [not all of it usable or arable or even worthwhile ]..

With the population of the world supposed to be double by 2050 and the problems of feeding everyone we got today.. I'm of the opinion that a few more hurricanes, tsunamis and earthquakes still won't be enough to slow down the population 'growth ' [ even factoring in the low birth rate among so-called developed western cultures ]..

Mother Nature better shift her efforts into higher gear if she wants to shake off those pesky humans.

Then again, maybe this was just a test run for 2012...

  10. Yup. Malthus was right. He just got the timescale wrong: a series of true Malthusian Catastrophes awaits us.

  11. I was contemplating making a donation to the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) on Saturday morning as I watched the news and the the scale of the disaster. That was until I saw Cyclops at some disaster relief place here in UK. Another photo-opportunity to show Gordo in some kind of good light, I suppose. One-eyed super-hero Gordon McSwamp to the rescue !

With his rictus smile and false concern, I thought, "F*ck it, if that tw*t is getting involved it's a lost cause, so the dosh will stay in my Bank."

So, to take this further, if the mere sight of him at a Disaster Centre, Hospital, visiting the troops in Afghanistan fills ME with enough anger to change my original decision, it must be the same for his NuLab cronies (as well as much of the electorate).

One really must ask why hasn't his bunch of thieves grown some and said forcefully to the one-eyed pillock, "Gordon, you are a f*ckin' liability. Stay indoors and keep away from the Media / Public until May....or just f*ck off and let us, the Parliamentary Liarblair party conduct some damage limitation.

    I made a donation anyway - to H4H.

  12. The Red Cross warehouse in Oxford was on the telly earlier today.Boxes of kit going out today to Haiti.
Five days after the event. Any insight into this apparent delay?

  13. Hmm, let's see now:

    1. From The Great Satan and all his imperialist running dogs = many squillions of dollars/Euro/English pounds.

    2. From جمهوری اسلامی ایران (sorry-just showing off: that's Iran, that is) and other munificent Islamic states = nowt, as far as I can see.

    ..............just saying, is all.

  14. Guantanamo bay- rumour circulating that injured could be shipped over to their medical facility. Might even build a temporary refugee camp there!
