Welcome to the Army Rumour Service, ARRSE

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial military website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. Seems after a serious crash caused by Steam, i lost my usb keyboard and mouse, so when the computer springs into life telling me its found new hardware i/e USB mouse and keyboard i cant do sod all as they dont work.

Tried using this keyboard and mouse but no joy, wondering if i can go through bios and get onto my computer that way, as all my good porns on there :D

Or should i just shoot it to bits.

So how are you typing then :?

A new USB keyboard/mouse set should only cost you about £35 if they are truly knackered.
  3. No, you can get new ones for that price. Then again, I'm not sure that they'd be compatible with a steam-powered PC.
  4. Im typing on another computer, it seems ive lost all USB on the other computer so it wont accept USB stuff at all. However im gonna get drunk now, so i'll probably come home and throw it out the window anyway :)
  5. My God, man! What are you going to spit coffee over in a humorous manner?!
  6. He still has a screen. :)

You might be able to get it to work with a PS2 connection instead then.
  8. When the system first starts up (before the Windows splash screen comes on) hit F8 multiple times to start the computer in "Safe Mode". The system will take some time to get to windows,, be patient.

If you have your USB kybd and mouse working in safe mode, it's probably not a hardware problem but a driver (software) problem. If it is working in Safe Mode, you can go into Control Panel, System, and I believe there is a tab for the hardware where you can remove any USB items (including USB hub), allow system to re-start and hopefully that will work. You may have to use the Tab and arrow up and down keys to navigate when the drivers are re-loading to make the selections until all are re-loaded and everything is working
  9. I agree, PS/2 is the way ahead for you, always assuming that you have a PS/2 connection on the back of the PC, but if it's old then you almost certainly will do. Lots available, alternatively just look for a USB to PS/2 converter, cheap and plentiful. If the machine doesn't recognise a PS/2 keyboard, then you are fecked!

All's not lost though, you can always bang the drive into an external housing and then get your gentlemans material off it that way.

We are talking about Scarletto here; it's not Gentleman's material, it's going to be pure grot.

After all, he used to be vulgar you know!
  11. Is this a wireless mouse and keyboard set or wired directly to USB?
Have you confirmed it is the USB port that's down by testing it with other USB devices?
Do you have other USB sockets available on the front of the computer or elsewhere?

    - If it's a wireless keyboard and mouse have you checked they are still sync'ed in with the base unit?
    - If you have other spare working USB sockets then you can get yourself a USB hub.

It seems strange for steam to be able to take out a USB socket!
  12. Thanks for the help :) I kicked it a few times instead.
  13. Nope, its still broken, tried a repair installation, however it 'hangs' on the last two minutes of loading. So been told its more likely a hardware fault. Which ive made worse, so will probably beat the fcuk out of it after coming back from pub tonight.
