Nimrod MR2 going early and MRA4 delayed

#1
Re todays announcements and from the MOD website;

"In addition, the Nimrod MR2 will be taken out of service in March 2010, 12 months earlier than planned, and the introduction of the Nimrod MRA4 will be delayed until 2012"

How exactly are they proposing to do any Maritime patrol / long range search and rescue / fisheries and borders protection in the 2 years when we won't have anything available. Its not like we are an island or anything is it ? :(

And thats before you start worrying about less pressing threats such as inquisitive foreign submarines.

Didn't they just spend a shedload of cash putting the fuel system to rights on the MR2's ?

I believe introduction refers to fully entry to service of the type, rather than first arrival. I think the phrase we're looking for is "seedcorn capability". Might be interesting to see how many MRA4's we're actually getting - is it 12 or less?

ISTR Magic Mushroom saying that our supposedly independent nuclear deterrant lacked credibility if we didn't have LRMP's to sweep the area while they deployed from Faslane?

It would appear from another forces rumour site, the bumbling fool that is masquerading as the Secretary of State for Defence answered the very question of capability gap with "...there will be no capability gap because we still have Hercules and Merlin!!!..."

FFS, this is the standard of muppet that is currently running the country, what an utter shambles we are turning into!!!!

We've only just got Merlin & now they're binning them!!! :?

Older Lynx and Merlin helicopters will be withdrawn sooner than planned, as will a navy survey ship and a mine hunter. Ainsworth also told MPs that "some aspects of army training" will be cut.
So the army's going back to shouting " BANG BANG! Your dead!"
