Father of Zarqawi victim draws no comfort from his death

NEW YORK (AFP)

The father of Nick Berg, a US businessman allegedly beheaded by Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, said Thursday he regretted the death of his son's murderer and warned of an upsurge in violence in Iraq.

"The death of every human being is a tragedy," Michael Berg said in a statement.

"The death of Mr. Zarqawi means a continuation of the violence and revenge that took the life of my son," he said. "This will mean an increase in violence and resistance to the occupation of Iraq by the US military."

The headless body of Nick Berg, 26, who had gone to Iraq to look into business opportunities in the communications industry, was found in May 2004, and the video of his beheading appeared on an Al-Qaeda linked website a few days later.

Michael Berg, a long time anti-war activist and a particularly vocal critic of the US-led invasion of Iraq, is currently standing as a Green Party candidate for the November elections to the US Congress.

"Revenge is something that I do not follow, I do want ask for, I do not wish for against anybody," said Berg who, in an interview with CNN, repeatedly refused to voice any pleasure in Zarqawi's death.

"How could a human being be glad that another human being is dead?" he said.

"He (Zarqawi) has a family who reacts just as my family reacted when Nick was killed, and I feel badly for that," Berg said. "I feel doubly badly because Zarqawi was a political figure, and his death will re-ignite another wave of revenge."

Nick Berg first went to Iraq in December, 2003 and stayed for more than one month.

He went back in March the following year, keeping in touch with his family by phone or e-mail every day, ahead of his planned return home at the end of the month.

Instead, for a reason still not fully explained, Berg was arrested by Iraqi police and jailed.

The FBI also became involved in his case and he was eventually released on April 6 after his desperate parents filed suit in federal court in Philadelphia, contending that he was being illegally held by the US military.

Berg immediately contacted his parents, but after a final phone call on April 9, communication ended completely and they never heard from him again.

Berg was Jewish, although the matter of his religion was never mentioned in the video statement read by his masked captors prior to his execution.

Edit (Good CO). No thanks.

Nick Berg's father is clearly a very noble man.

However that phrase does not wash with me. If there is a hell, Zarqawi will be there right now, knowing full what what he did to deserve it. He used religion as a tool for his own gain (as others have done with other religions). He knew what he was doing killing hostages. Or when men, women and children (Muslim ones at that, how can the Koran justify those actions?) were killed through bombings.

Edit - I wasn't copying MS164 I swears it, I just took ages to write my comment.

Luke 23:34

Do you lower yourself to their level? If I were Berg's father, I would probably celebrate Zarqawi's death too. That does not mean that I do not respect someone who can forgive their child's murderer

PassingBells, I do understand what you say about your respect for Mr Berg. It is a respect I also hold for him.

I don't want this to turn into a bible slagging match, however I would just like to point out that there were a lot of crazy things said in the bible. One example for you would be when Jesus commented on the ten commandments, on the issue of adultery:

Matthew 5 27-29 said:
"You have heard that it is said, 'Do not commit adultery'. But now I tell you: anyone who looks at a woman and wants to posses her is guilty of committing adultery with her in his heart. So if your right eye causes you to sin, take it out and throw it away! It is much better for you to lose a part of your body than to have your whole body thrown into hell."
Er...right Jesus, whatever you say mate..

Well, I'm not going to forgive him. I'm glad he's dead. And I hope it was extremely painful and slow. But what I really want for these monsters is a lifetime of despair and realisation that they have failed utterly and, preferably, repentance.

I would take people like Zarq thingy and wage psychological war on them until they were utterly broken in spirit and begging for forgiveness. And then tout them round the bazaars. And be damned to their dignity and human rights.

I want to be able to shoot burglars, too.

In that case we should all be minus our right hands.

Not sure why I lost my leg?

While I admire Mr Bergs forgiveness, he is wrong to say it is a cause for sadness. A truly evil man has received justice, he himslef will do no more harm. And if a thousand rise up to replace him, why we have thousands more missiles to deal with them in a similar manner.

That video is truely horrific! How anybody can do that is beyond me and I do believe that the world is a better place for having killed that Barbaric son of a b1tch!

I wold love to get on my soap box and say that everybody has a right to life and human rights, which I do believe, but as soona s someone crosses the line and affects someone elses right to life, then they lose their own. I would however make it a swift death rather than torture as I would not want to stoop as low. I think his death was necessary to stop his acts in which he obvioulsy had no intention of stopping or remorse for!!

Ba$tard and i hope he rots in hell!

(Am really angry now!)
