Interesting piece on Newsnight Besides going over the NATO issues it looked at a comparison between different areas and progress towards a lasting resolution. One of the points raised was that the UK forces are winning every single combat operation but getting more or less nowhere with a lasting solution because of a couple of things 1. Lack of cash to oil the wheels of the reconstruction and governance effort 2. Lack of civilians from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office / Department for International Development participating because of risk. In contrast to some of the areas where the US is operating, they have cart loads of cash and civilians willing to go into harms way to do the reconstruction tasks. Don't really know the actual situation but it seemed like a fair point.
