I'm sure there were very good cost saving reasons to get rid of them but I can't help thinking that the old square rig looked a a lot smarter than shirts. Northumberland's jimmy should be ****ing ashamed to let his sailors be photographed looking like that.

Makes you wonder what effect there'd be on the defence budget if all the Services had just one uniform (durable and of a colour that didn't show gravy stains) and got rid of the silly hats and embellished rank insignia.

Gets my vote. Squaddies could all dress in matelot style uniform, thereby avoiding the CS95/dessies/MTP issue whereby matelots keep being mistaken for squaddies.
They tried that in Canada, it failed
To be fair, the vast majority of Ships Company at the show looked spot on, and were a genuine credit.
At least one could see them, unlike the MTP clad types lurking there...
