New Zealand awesomeness or shittiness

If you ban it it just goes underground and then you can't manage it..... plus loose the tax.

Morning All,
From today's local 'comic'.
Good idea or nanny state?View attachment 621653
Nanny state/ virtue signaling. NZ already restricts sales of tobacco products to only 18 and above, and I'm sure taxes the hell out of them to recover the health care costs expended by the state for those smokers who develop cancer and/or breathing problems later in life. What more do the "do-gooders" expect? Too much government interference in my view and if this gets passed into legislation, their children will be running fags from Australia on cigarette boats and there'll be smoking room speak easies in Wellington and Auckland in the 2080s, just like in Chicago and New York in the 1920s when the US tried to ban alcohol with a constitutional amendment. The only thing the total ban on alcohol did for the US is that it strengthened Organized Crime. People still want to drink, and they'll get it from whoever has it. The same thing applies to smokes.

If the voters of NZ are given the right to choose, I hope they vote this hare-brained scheme down.

What about de weed though? will, that be made legal as in Canada (two countries trying to out woke each other). How long before this one is imported into UK? Hang on a mo, is not a fag in her gob a mark of Raynor's working class credentials?

They tried but it got shot down in a referendum. Once the dust settled the point became apparent that what would be a recreational drug in some circles would just be adding to the social, economic and health issues that alcohol and smoking are already causing. They have jacked up the cost of cigarettes a lot here in the past thinking that will stop people smoking but forgot people are creatures of habit.

Morning All,
If baccy is banned, how is the climate in NZ suited to people growing it on the quiet?
Coromandel Peninsula.

Mind you, they're going to have to grow less weed to make space for it!

Motueka is a town in the South Island of New Zealand, close to the mouth of the Motueka River on the western shore of Tasman Bay / Te Tai-o-Aorere. It is the second largest in the Tasman Region, with a population of 8,280 as of June 2021.[2]

The surrounding district has a number of apple, pear and kiwifruit orchards, as well as growing a variety of specialised crops such as hops. The area formerly served as the main centre of tobacco growing in New Zealand.

I would have considered the Bay of Islands where the two great oceans meet. I had a phenomenal non-smoking break there when on a 'Long Look' exercise.

Countering anti-vax propaganda is one thing but "government approved" has an authoritarian ring to it, particularly given Ardern's apparent pro-China rhetoric (or pragmatism?). Is JHB over reacting though? She has a tendency to be overly sceptical and outspoken and doesn't always get her facts right. I am wary of Ardern though.

To quote myself, now all done and dusted for another year.
Er is still nibbling away, me, I am as full as the family po and going for an afternoon siesta.
I am reliably informed that the menu lived up to all expectations.
