New to the game - advice needed

Having recently gone out on an impulse and bought an Air Rifle from a local Sports Store I decided instead of doing the whole shooting cans in the garden I would go out hunting small game like rabbits/Squirrils. However of course I need permission to shoot on the local land, which is the problem: I haven't a clue who owns the land behind the house and to just go shooting anyway is not on the cards.

A quick google session yeilded no results so any suggestions what the best way to go about it is? (Especially if it means not paying for the information om the council)

Plus any pearls of wisdom about what to take on a hunting session would be most appreciated.
