Although, one of the “lakes” obliquely referred to by Fang is actually a “laich” and technically doesn’t refer to the body of water (despite what the OS says).None. All those words mean "lake".

Ask him how he pronounces Balloch because they are pronounced differently north and south. On the same drift, how do you pronounce the name of the big island in Loch Lomond, Inchmurrin? After you've answered, ask a few fellow Scots. A mate who hailed from Balloch admitted that he didn't know.
The one on Loch Lomondside or the one in Cumbernauld?Ask him how he pronounces Balloch because they are pronounced differently north and south.![]()

Currently weighing up options for a potential return to Scotland this year.
We’re supposed to be going to Greece in July but if that goes to pot then we’re gonna do round two but this time with a bit more planning, now we know the area.
We’ll be looking to miss out some of the duller parts on the East Coast and head straight to Thurso for a ferry over to Orkney.
Then do all the good bits on the West coast again, before getting another ferry from Ullapool to Harris.
Probably do another mix of wild camping and campsites, although this time we may go for some hotels in Stirling on the way up, Ullapool and Fort William on the way home.
So suggestions for stuff to do in Orkney and Harris please.
Rough outline itinerary:
Day 1. Cumbria to Stirling - Overnight in hotel, do Stirling Castle etc.
Day 2. Stirling to Latheronwheel - See the dolphins we missed on the Black Isle last time, Dornoch beach if the weather is good (it was shite last time). Camp at Latheronwheel, they have a lovely little harbour with BBQs and a mowed area for tents etc.
Day 3. Latheronwheel to Thurso to Orkney via ferry.
Day 4. Orkney
Day 5. Ferry from Orkney back to Thurso to Sango Sands (mega campsite on the beach that we stayed at last time).
Day 6. Sango Sands to Ullapool - best bit of driving by far, hotel for night in Ullapool depending on ferry times.
Day 7. Ferry from Ullapool to Harris.
Day 8. Harris.
Day 9. Ferry from Harris to Uig on Skye.
Day 10. Skye to Fort William, hotel for night.
Day 11. Fort William to home.
