As has been pointed out by more than one, she's dual Iranian-British so in the eyes of Iran she is only an Iranian when in Iran and that means her dual nationality means squat and UKGov get told to swivel no matter what.

And I think we're still waiting for the whining mob to explain why an "aid worker in Iran" (that was one report, iirc) was only "visiting her family", for the impression given is that she is as much an innocent in all of this as Mark Duggan was an "angel who loved old grannies and helped puppies cross the road with their shopping".

The Iranians have a lot of form when it comes to using foreign nationals to force concessions from other countries. Notably us.

They held a British businessman for about five years back in the late 80's on a pretext (Peter Cooper??) .

End-game was to get HMG to repatriate a chunk of money deposited here by the Shah's regime. Can't remember how that one resolved but IIRC the Brit was eventually released.

We still couldn't sell the Iranians anything though, cos by then the FCO had found another good reason to have no truck with them. (Basically the Yanks wouldn't like it)

But apparently it's okay for other EU nations to have extensive dealings with the Iranian regime

Envoy: Iran-Poland trade threefold

The Polish prime minister, for her part, recalled Iranians' hospitality for Polish refugees during the Second World War, and said, "Warsaw is keen to enhance all-out ties with Iran."

Italy’s Fiat to Be Back in Iran: Official - Economy news - Tasnim News Agency

" In June 2016, Iran’s leading vehicle manufacturer Iran Khodro and the French carmaker Peugeot-Citroen (PSA) agreed to launch a joint auto company in Tehran under a joint venture worth 400 million euros. "

So the British tanks, Vosper Thorneycroft frigates and Rolls Royce engined power stations we supplied them with in the 70s have gradually been replaced with Chinese, Turkish,Russian and French equivalents.

Isn't it just GREAT to have a deep and meaningful Special Relationship folks.....

If she was an "aid worker" then she wasn't just on a holiday to visit her family, was she.

She's finding out the hard way that if you stick your nose into the business of others, don't be surprised if someone cuts it off.

Well at least she can take comfort that her case officers will still get their gold-plated pensions and gongs to add to those they got for getting that other Brit (Hedges?) locked up in UAE recently.

IMHO Iran is absolutely correct in stating that as a dual national, what happens in Iran to this woman is none of our business. Hunt is a prat and out of his depth, as demonstrated in other ministerial positions, not least Health.

Oooooh you are being "anti-semitic" so should immediately cease all media activities and apologise to Parliament

Thread resurrection I know but this woman has now served her sentence and should be coming home to her daughter and her husband.

The Iranians apparently now have further charges to bring against her and the word is she will shortly be back in court.

In the meantime, the Iranians are still demanding £400M from the UK for a deal that fell through at the time of the Iranian revolution.

The UK doesn’t deny it owes the money, It just says that under the current sanctions, sanctions that are in place because the Iranians are trying to build nuclear weapons, the UK can’t give the money over until the sanctions are lifted.

I’d go a step further. Some might say this wouldn’t be helpful but the Iranians aren’t playing fairly anyway and the odds are they never will.

How about we make substantial deductions from the £400M for every UK citizen or person with joint citizenship of the UK and Iran and pay it to their families as a form of reparations for the pain and suffering caused to those families by the detention of their loved ones in Iran.

A million quid a head a year would go a long way to help families who are suffering because of this indirect form of Iranian aggression. Legislate to make it legal and get on with it. When Iran eventually gets it’s money and they’re a hundred million short, the UK government can assure them that the money went to some very good causes!

Latest news on Sky said that her ankle bracelet had been removed, but that she is expected back in court next Sunday (possibly to face futher charges). Her passports have not been returned to her either. My guess is that she is still a political football.

The Iranian government. (not the people) are utter ladies front bottoms. When they started to get bolshie in Lebanon in the early 80s. That was the time they should have been sat on . Hard. They were weakened by the war in Iraq. There wasn't the political will to do anything in the west though. They played Obama like a fiddle on the nuclear deal. I suspect it will be left to Israel to deal with them (as usual) at the end of the day.

SWMBO & I were talking about her reported ability to (cough) "move freely"
Would the UK even consider trying to get her near enough a more western eg Turkey border to extract?
Nice job for Mossad but why would they get involved...other than to stick one up 'em.
I reckon we;ve watched too much Netflix especially Homeland, and it's a non starter.
Also we know Jack about Middle East matters really....
Have to say her husband has kept his dignity & cool, but equally....he'd have to.
The cnuts.

Agree with that but will go one further in that any Iranian is not to be trusted.

In the 1970s I worked in the drawing office of HawkSiran a Hawker Sidney owned company exporting C K D Diesel engine kits for pumping water or whatever to Iran.
Then the ayatollah khomeini went home as the Shah was overthrown and guess what they kept all the engines and didn’t pay any money owed. Exports banned to Iran and factory closed. You can’t trust ‘em.

No wonder. They aren't Arabs and the national language is Farsi... ;-)

Not surprised that they didn't care for your grandfather, considering they speak Farsi in Iran/Persia and not Arabic. They also (with just cause) regard themselves as Caucasian and definitely not Arabic.

I suppose this is one of the unfortunate aspects of dual nationality.

That was a bit of a waste of time, the thick ****.

As they would have been speaking Farsi, no wonder his Arabic didn't get listened to much.

ETA: As immediately mentioned by a zillion other posters already . . . oops.

I'm pretty sure they could get her back in exchange for a couple of pallets of covid-19 vaccine.

...or being a national of Iran, and playing with the lion's balls. There is something wrong about the first imprisonment - she came into the sights of the government for some reason (nefearious or not), but the new "charges" are political.
