NK has had a number of *experimental* missile submarines under construction since 1994 -- the Gorae "Whale" class. They are likely to have some basic operational capability by now, even if a long way behind Western standards.

They have also put a number of former Soviet "Golf" class ballistic missile submarines back into service which were originally bought for scrap from Russia, but the NKs have refurbished them and put them back into limited services.

Do not underestimate the Fat Boy.

Especially when the experts spotted old Eastern Germany Technology on their new Ballistic missiles..... of course the subs will sound like a motorbike without an exhaust when it comes to tracking.

Alex Salmond is not doing much these days and was once compared to Kim Jong Il. Both are from political parties that reject democracy unless it gives the right answers.

The last time HM Government sent a special representative to North Korea the local leadership got a sad on after he said:

Naive is assuming the conventional political leaders who put on a show and tell you what you want to hear but in private say something totally different are really better.

Western leaders need to answer why Trump got to meet Kim and put on a show of shaking hands and all smiles but they didn't get anywhere near him.

Kim got to show off to the home audience how important he was by having a world leader meet with him.

Previous American presidents wouldn't meet with him because they saw a meeting as being a sort of reward for good behaviour which they would withhold until they got everything they wanted from Kim first. Kim however wouldn't play that game, so it was a stalemate.

Personally I don't fault Trump for being willing to meet with Kim, as the "not meeting" that his predecessors did didn't work either.

In my opinion think the Americans have painted themselves into a corner in dealing with North Korea by following a policy of "all stick and no carrot" for reasons that have mainly to do with domestic American politics rather than diplomatic strategy. That probably won't change any time soon, so I don't expect Biden to make any progress there should he turn his attention in that direction.

The reason why Kim listens to Xi at least to some degree is that Beijing mix a few carrots in with the stick so North Korea actually have something to lose if they annoy Beijing too much.
