Mystery Antenna

Welcome to the Army Rumour Service, ARRSE

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial military website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. A couple of months ago I witnessed a helicopter flying a grid pattern near my parents house. It flew past us when it had finished (on its way to another job I surmise. No airport in that direction) It had a spar or antenna on either side of the cab at an angle of about 45 degrees. Am I correct in assuming this is Ground Penetrating Radar of some sort or might it be geophys instrument?
  2. How long were the antennae (roughly); it could be some kind of magnetometer. It's unlikely to be GPR as this usually needs to be in contact with the ground.
  3. Likely to be magnometry of some type.

Often see them in the area where I work as they're about to start redeveloping the WWII airfield. Sixty years of undergrowth could be hiding anything!

    Or could be the CIA.
You are still wearing the tinfoil hat, aren't you?
  4. Now you mention it it was sort

I reckon about 2 metres length, apparently attached at the level of the skid/fuselage joints with a brace or wire from their centre up to above the doors.
Could it be an archeological survey?
  5. Chopper time is expensive, so the equipment tends to be used by specialist companies for commercial ventures. Quickest way to investigate large areas or where access is an issue.

Like I said earlier, by me they're flying around looking for voids, aquifers and other underground features according to the sign where they've closed a footpath across the site.

So in your case, probably geo survey, possibly Baldrick and his hippy mate.
See who turns up next. If it's a bunch of Mancs drilling boreholes, your parents could be looking forward to a nice new estate next door. Or a beef rendering factory. Or a bypass. If it's some crusties with trowels they'll probably be ok.

Google magnetometry and helicopter for images. (can't post pics from here).
  6. Are you sure it wasn't a remote control model being flown by a very rich bored kid?
  7. If the models scale was 1:1 then thats a possibity.
