  1. Idukki district is located in the southern part of Kerala. It is a landlocked district spread over an area of 5061 sq kms. It is blessed by Mother Nature and is famous for its natural landscape and hills. The district is nestled in the Western Ghats. So a major part of the district is covered by forests and hills. Idukki offers diverse attractions like wildlife sanctuaries, hill stations, spice plantations and adventure treks. Munnar and Thekkady are very famous in Idukki district. Munnar is a famous hill station that has beautiful tea plantations. It is a beautiful station situated on the Western Ghats at about 1600 mts above sea level. The town is situated at the confluence of three mountain streams of Mudrapuzha, Nallathani and Kundala. There are lakes, reservoirs, green forests and several tea estates. Anamudi, the highest peak in South India is located nearby. There is a wildlife sanctuary in the Eravikulam-Rajamala area. Chinar Wildlife sanctuary is close to the Eravikulam National Park. Munnar was the summer resort of the British Government. There is an Indo-Swiss dairy farm and dam at Mattupetty town. The Kundala tea plantations offer a stunning view of Munnar. Marayoor relics of the New Stone Age civilization have been unearthed 40 kms away from Munnar.

Thekkady is another place in Idukki district that is famous for its wildlife sanctuary and spice plantations. The Periyar Wildlife sanctuary is located in the Periyar forests of Thekkady. Thekkady is itself a spice town. The Periyar Wildlife sanctuary is home to a number of wild animals like the bison, gaur, tiger and the elephants. The Nilgiri Tahr can also be found here. There are many species of birds and more than 100 species of butterflies in this sanctuary. The main attraction of this place is the Periyar Lake. This is an artificial lake that is the main source of water for the animals of the sanctuary. The KTDC and the forest department have made arrangements for boating in the lake. A boat cruise is the best way of watching the wildlife in their natural surroundings.
