Welcome to the Army Rumour Service, ARRSE

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial military website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. WHY WERE THE MUJAHEDIN SO GOOD AGAINST THE RUSSIAN HORDE AND FAIRLY WELL ORGANISED , WHERE THE TALEBAN SEEM TO FAVOUR THE NAM VC TYPE TACTICS ,IS IT JUST DOWN TO NUMBERS AND LACK OF SUPPORT OF THE LOCAL TRIBESMAN FOR THE TALEBAN?

  2. Sorry? I can hardly hear, some cnuts shouting.

    Oh, and Sylvester Stallone. Probably.

  3. The Muj were trained by the Brits, Yanks and the French.

  4. Masher,
Would you mind taking your caps lock off – it’s awfully rude to shout, especially on a Friday PM when we are winding down for the weekend.
    Cheers

  6. sorry about caps lock , i type head down as not very good at typing

  7. The muhajadeen had the suppport of the people throughout AFG - the Taleban do not

  8. To be honest. Early doors in Afgantistan there wasn't that much difference in numbers and skills levels. What has made a major difference is to be found in response times of suporting arms. The Soviet Army's own Staff College made a study of actions in AFG broken down by incident type. Time and time again Afghan fighters were able to break contact at will before supporting arms could be brought to bear. It could and did take over an hour to bring down fire from supporting arms due to Soviet doctrine. Radio Comms failures weren't planned for, meaning that only once comms had failed were attempts made to cover comms blackspots. Anti ambush drills weren't followed correctly, deliberate operations were made blindingly obvious by a full, formal parade ground inspection that could take 2 days to set up. Ambush's were highlightened by very poor discipline, operations on foot were slowed by the pointless dragging of over heavy support weapons, such the AGS-30 grenade launcher, at 30kgs for the sledge alone....!

Conversaly ambushs in AFG were, and seemingly still are, frequently wide area ambushs in green zone areas. Which results in units believing they are "fighting" their way thro defence positions...
