Mozambique - The Next War?

and face the howls of colonialism / atrocities / whatever else the left on all sides will fling? not saying you're wrong, just playing devils advocate.

The BBC World News report presented in the US t'other night mentioned PMC's operating in Mozambique in the present area of conflict. Sadly the mention was not a positive one as they stated that many of the locals were easy recruitment pickings for the militia due to the heavy handed nature of some of the PMC's.

Like Uncle Sam found out eventually, in Vietnam, its about hearts and minds..........with a population in poverty you cannot wander around like an overseer on a plantation. You need to invest a little in the local economy and it pays dividends in return. All these gas and mineral contracts its the politicos and the foreign corporates getting rich, the locals still grub around in the dirt. Offer them some stability and an income and they become your best mucker.

The EU has also been asked for support. So far an EUTM MOZ has been ruled out.

France has Total in situ with a multi billion euros project but so far the MOZ authoriries have been reluctant to accept support from any Western nation.

With IS progresses, it could change but at the moment it's mostly PMC country
Can you blame them after the mess left by those holigans from the SAS, Selous Scouts and RLI in the seventies.

The thing is, all the money from the foreign corporations goes to the Moz government who use it to enrich themselves and their own tribal group. Thats Africa. Rinse and repeat anywhere else on the continent.

France 24 reports agreement to send Portuguese military being finalised. Portugal is the (former) colonial power and the locals still speak the language.

Despite being a colony of the Portugal until 1975, Mozambique is a member of the Commonwealth.

my theory: DAG contract up for renewal...slip the local militia a few quid to kick off, contract renewed enhanced and renewed.

Bob may need to re-evaluate his attraction to the country.

Dylan wrote that literally while it was all going to shit - I have never understood whether it was meant to be ironic or whether, like a good cousin, he had no idea what was happening in foreignland.

Yep.

'Portugal will dispatch soldiers in the first half of April to Mozambique where they will train local troops following an attack by Islamist insurgents on the town of Palma, Lusa news agency said on Tuesday, citing a defense ministry source.

'The Portuguese news agency said a bilateral agreement calling for a total of 60 special forces troops to Mozambique was being finalised. Portuguese Foreign Minister Augusto Santos Silva also told the state TV channel RTP late Monday that a team of "around 60" soldiers were "getting ready" to be sent to Portugals's former colony "in the coming weeks". The team would "support the Mozambican army in training special forces," he said.

'On Monday, the US said it was "committed to working together with the government of Mozambique" to counter terrorism and defeat the IS group. Critics have, however, slammed the international community for once again focusing on a counterterror strategy in yet another African country that involves cooperating with and propping up governments that fail to provide for their marginalised citizens.'

Portugal to send troops to Mozambique after brazen Palma attack by Islamic insurgents

Given the huge Chinese investment in the area, could not they be requested to provide military assistance? How the CPLA deal with counter insurgency could prove interesting?

The massive jaw dropping irony of this has obviously passed right by those critics. I'd bet a shiny sixpence that same collection of intelligentsia were extremely vocal in their condemnation of the Portuguese at the time and wanted the current FRELIMO govt in charge tout suite.

An interesting "Who's who" of international security actors in Mozambique today
