Most Ugly Aircraft

Not quite as specialised as that but the RUC did evaluate an Optica for three months in 1988.

Was Optica particularly quiet and suiable for night flying? I ask because I recall walking at night with my father and we saw 2 sets of lights, apparently nav lights of fixed wing aircraft at low altitude, fly silently above us and off along the coast.

Yeah.. Good vis and ducted rear fan!

pity they seemed to attract arsonists and were vulnerable to freaked out photographers...!

How many Opticas were actually made/sold? The ads were in the aviation glossies for years.

I always remember them on TV being used by the police for monitoring motorways.

ISTR that Trago Mills in Newton Abbot had one suspended from the ceiling many years back.

edited to add, it’s actually this one.

Interestingly, the Trago Mills Company financed the development of this plane.

Trago Mills sold the design to the company that builds the Optica.

Refuelling probe? Must have been interesting getting a splash of spilled fuel in the intakes.
