A glorious tradition, hailing back to a bygone age, participants revelling in connecting the past with the present. Cheering crowds, uniquely British, celebrating 600 years of Morris history.......

British? Fcuking British? :omfg:

When was the last time you saw 'Welsh' morris dancers, let alone bloody Scots!

Morris dancing is for petticoat -wearing, shandy-drinking, ice and a slice ENGLISH poofters!

So please desist from speading this pox-ridden disease west and north to territories that don't give a damn about 1966 and football coming home!

That's rich coming from a nation where the national dress is a skirt.

Isn't YOUR working dress a skirt Doris? :)

Anyway, where the fcuk have you been lately? I do hope it was nothing trivial, otherwise I might have to think the only reason you were absent was a mild case of PMT.

Edited to add: Are young Morris dancers called Morris minors?

Ahem!

Tosser!

Do English morris dancers wear clogs?

Just because there's a Welsh group of pansies in clogs flouncing around trying to not win the 'Only gay in the village' award before rogering some sheep, doesn't make the morris dancers now does it, you bell end!

Aren't Morris dancers some sort of pagan tradition to give thanks to the pagan gods, a d bring fertility or something, and as such as bad as the Muslims, as they attempt to detract us from giving praise, or even believing in Jesus christ, our lord and saviour

Quite interesting stuff in Wiki.

by 1492 Ferdinand of Aragon and Isabella of Castille succeeded in driving the Moors out of Spain and unifying the country. In celebration of this a pageant known as a Moresca was devised and performed. This can still be seen performed in places such as Ainsa, Aragon. Incorporated into this pageant was the local dance — the Paloteao. This too can still be seen performed in the villages of Aragon. The original ´Moresca´ is a sword dance. The sticks in Morris dance are a residual of the swords in the 'Moresca'. The similarity to what became known as the English "morris" is undoubted.[citation needed] Early court records state that the "moresque" was performed at court in her honour, including the dance — the "moresque" or "morisce" or "morys" dance.

Plus..these fuckers are all over the world, so we're not the only lunatics.

They are harmless. I once saw a drunk wander into a troupe of Morris Dancers in manner that would have had him in trouble anywhere else. Before he knew it he was part of the performance and enjoying himself. He left in a somewhat confused state but totally physically unharmed. If this had been some belligerent group of "sporting" fans or political protesters he may not have been so well received.

I wonder if they wear the bells in bed!

What about those very strange bods who prance about with a horses skull, frightened the crap out of me at last Years Welsh music and dance festival at Tredegar House, mind you I was very drunk, to much real ale

ooer, could cause lots of complaints from our "POLYCHROME" brethren, the lot I saw on the video clip were "blacking up"!! Surely enough to bring down the wrath of "Trevor Phillips" & his racial equality team!

Was the term "Morris" not actually derived from a form of religious celebration originally known as "Moorish", and brought to the British Isles from the region now known as Spain ( then Islamic and peopled by Moors!!!!) by itinerant immigrants?
Are there any true historians of this now harmless form of entertainment out there?

The Moors were defeated & kicked out of Spain in the 13th c.
I live in Morocco and know of NO moorish dance akin to the "morris mens". Unless it is a type of "Moussem", ( a religious festival in honour of a local "saint", where some dance to "gnaoua" music into a trancelike state), There are many other forms of music here some with Arabic roots, some Berber and in the South, Sarhawi which has a lot of sub saharan influences. An important one is ""ANDALUSIAN", some of which is akin to "flamenco" music, there are hot debates as to whether this developed in Spain or Morocco!
As for "blacking" up to resemble Moors, most Moroccans are of a "cafe au lait" hue. Although Moulay Ismael did import over 100,000 sub saharan Africans to provide him with a strong army in the 17th c. These became his "Black Guard" and help defeat not only rivals to the throne but Berber uprisings & forays by some European powers, helping him unite what we now call Morocco! He gave these black Africans, Berber women as wives, this can be seen in the darker hue's of some of todays Moroccans!

Originally it was a Spanish sword dance in celebration of the Moors being kicked out. See Wiki on Morris Dance.
