Mobilization

Welcome to the Army Rumour Service, ARRSE

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial military website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. I am a bit confused.

I would like to join the TA but I am confused about mobilisation and whether or not it is compulsory or voluntary.

I visited a unit recently and was told that nearly everyone there had been on a tour recently and that they asked for volunteers but then if there were not enough volunteers then they made it compulsory.

I am not in a position at the moment family wise to commit to going away for a tour but would like to at some point in the future although this could be 5 years away or maybe 10 - who knows what the future holds?

But my question is this: Should I join now or wait for a few years when I am more able to go on tour? Or should I join a unit which is more UK based? I have a signals unit near which says it supports the UK emergency services etc.

    Any advice appreciated.

    Currently all mobilisation is voluntary.

That may change at any time.

  3. Do it.....did it 18 years ago..still in...been great :)
great time to join..lots of chances to enjoy it

  4. Go to your local unit and have a look around. While there ask about being mobilised.

  5. Is that the same for all units?

They seemed quite certain that there had been compulsory call ups recently and would be again very soon.

All mobilisations since Nov 2005 have been voluntary. Some people say they have been compulsorily mobilised so as not to upset the domestic chief of staff or their employers.

Others have come under a certain amount of pressure to put their names into the hat.

  8. So could I join up and not mobilise for a few years? even if that was quite a few years?

  10. Just dont forget you could be compulsary mobilised at anytime. Who knows what is going to happen in the near future. The army is very pushed at the moment wot with various responsibilitys around the world. Just bear that in mind.

  11. My OH papers in December were definately compulsory but that could be cos he's REME although he's attatched to a local unit.

  13. TA. Been in 3 years

  14. Yes I know things can change at any time. That is why I am thinking very carefully about it before I make any decision.

I need to go and visit some more of my local units and see what they say then weigh it all up and decide what to do. I may leave off joining for a few years but time isnt on my side so i cant leave it too long...

What Signals unit is near to you, that may be your best option if your worried because as you say they are to assist the blue light services in times of crisis so there is less chance of being called up to go to somewhere hot and sunny. it will give you more time to sort yourself out before you voluntry put your name down? :)
