Michael Wittmann's Knight's Cross for sale at auction

Just goes to show, in that picture of the model Tiger, if you had to do any job on the gearbox or front drive train, you needed to get the turret off. The fanbois like to slag off the T-34, but at least, all of it's engine and drivetrain were at the back, under one or two hatches.

There is another possibility, he (Wittmann) could have taken his Iron Cross Second Class to a jeweller and simply had a ring soldered to its upper arm. This was permissible, and was often done in the late war period when an awardee might not have been able to obtain the real thing, or when they wanted to save themselves a little expense. Although the Knight's Cross was the largest of the three grades, who was going to notice? And the Iron Cross Second Class was mostly only ever going to be worn as a ribbon anyway.

(From: Iron Cross 2nd Class)

This echoes something that I read some years ago.
When a Knight's Cross was announced in orders (gazetted?) the recipient was entitled to wear from then on in.
If the individual was in the line (say Eastern Front) it was sometimes customary for colleagues to borrow or obtain an EKII and present it to the recipient with a boot lace threaded through the hoop so as to wear as a neck decoration.
This would suffice until the actual award and was accepted practice.

The article also said that it was rare for an individual to wear his original on active service hence the large amount of authorised replicas in circulation.

BTW, for those interested, do a count up uf Knight's Crosses awarded 1939-1945 then compare with the entire award history of the VC and the US Medal of Hono(u)r and be prepared to be surprised.

Oh look another arrse revisionist history thread where a country that lost the war has miraculously managed to doctor the history books to paint it's combat performance in a favourable light.

The problem with this is, if you were German born in 1918 by 1938 (20 yrs old) and indoctrinated with err shall we say anti Jewish feelings, then you would dance to their tune.
Unless you were truly brave, to wish a death sentence on yourself and your family.
I have tbh, I wouldnt.
I'd have marched to their tune.
History and hindsight is wonderful.

There was no compulsion to be a murderous thug in a death camp.
Hitler issued a Fuhrer Biefehl that mandated that any SS in a camp could demand transfer to a combat unit. Unsurprisingly, not many availed themselves of the opportunity to go from murderers to serving in the field.

And plenty of Germans did the right thing at huge risk to themselves in WWII.

Changing the oil required the removal of a brace of roadwheels... :)

This huge specially designed crane was an essential part of a Tiger mechanics toolkit

They have one of those cranes at the Normandy D Day Museum nr Omaha beach.

The French Army were using it post war...and not just on their Panther tanks.

It's one of two known examples left in the world.

thats what won the war; logistics, field repairable kit and plenty of it. German Pows used to gasp at the amount of kit the yanks had as standard. Trucks, trucks and more trucks, more men, more fuel and oil, more guns, more jeeps, more ships, more firepower. No matter how much captured stuff they had, they could never beat Allied production rates.

You're an idiot.

The German population duriing the War years was 80 fecking million.

You can do your own research to see how many million men and women they had in Uniform

You name one decent one out of that lot?.... then spout off that plenty of others did the right thing, without not one link or evidence to support this nonsense

You'd struggle to find 10 .

they were towed by the biggest FAMO half tracks and were regarded as critical to operations. Tigers didnt go for a swan unless the cranes were set up and the toolboxes opened.

Yiu seem very upset at the idea that Germans weren’t compelled to be muderers.
In your own time.... how many German soldiers were executed for refusing to kill Jews?

Nah, not upset at the complexities of war or what people do during it .. I just like calling you out everytime you post shite. As for being compelled to be murders, ha ha, no one is compelled, they just seemed to enjoying it and justify it via a load of nazi Bolloxs about being victims.

...and your question just shows how stupid you are as you can't list all any of those many others you claim behaved like Herr Battel, then ask me a question to cover this up - which if i answerd, would further show that you're orignial statement was bolloxs.

You're not used to debating or being challenged over things are you Fotze? ...

Do you live on your own and have no intelligent converstion with other people most of the time? or are you just and Aspie?

At least 100 documented for refusing to kill civilians. You can so the research on religious leaning. You appear to forget concentration camp inmates were not all Jews.

If you review the regime at the time, to refuse order meant you were stood next in line to the civilians. Grow up and stop derailing every thread you come across.
