Met blitzes petty offences to meet targets

The Metropolitan Police are today accused of launching a blitz on minor offences in a desperate bid to meet government targets for crime.

The force has been issuing huge numbers of on-the-spot fines and verbal warnings solely to hit Whitehall-imposed clearup rates.

A memo leaked to the Evening Standard reveals officers have been instructed to issue 1,000 warnings a month to cannabis users and 1,000 fixed penalties for low-level disorder.
