Mess Steward/Manager course

Judgekid

War hero
Apologies in advance if this is the wrong forum.

Anyhow, does anyone know if there is a course of this type for TA people or is the only course a four week course that is for regular personnel?

Further to that, but not necessarily linked, would you know whereabouts on Armynet that courses are listed?

Thank you.

There is a 15 day Basic Mess Steward course run by the catering training school at RAF Halton:

The basic Army steward course consists of five training modules; carry out reception and accommodation duties, provide a bar service, run a food service operation, carry out housekeeping duties and working within a CRL environment. All five modules consist of both theory and practical lessons. Throughout the course there will be progress (formative) testing, to check understanding. There will also be final (summative) theory and practical testing of the five modules to ensure all the training objectives have been met. Students must pass all summative tests to successfully pass the course.

There is also the Mess Supervisors course 15 days at the same place:

The mess supervisor course consists of seven basic skills training modules; staff management, supervision of bar and dining room, maintenance of mess accounts, mess reception, housekeeping, bar & cellar management and supervising within a CRL environment. All seven modules consist of both theory and practical lessons. Throughout the course there will be progress (formative) testing, to check understanding. There will also be final (summative) theory and practical testing of the seven modules to ensure all the training objectives have been met. Students must pass all summative tests to successfully pass the course.

On Armynet search for 'courses'.

Good question Mr Duke.

However, the OC of the person concerned suggested the course when all other attempts to get the soldier on a trade course have so far failed. The soldier had legimate reasons apparently for not being able to take part in the unit's annual camp.

Still there are a million other courses that he could do. Leaving that aside if he goes as C1-unpaid the days will still count towards his bounty but he gets no money...sounds like a plan.

There is no established PID for an Officers Mess Manager or staff in a TA Inf Bn (and presumably for any other TA unit?), difficult to justify a course bid or the MTDs without one.

So your sub unit has a full complement of PTIs, MAPRICs, Driving Instructors, CBRN Instructors, BCDT Instructors, RMQ qualified bods, a DIT Instructor and all the others that are handy to have 'in-house'?

msr

Well there may be a shortage of RMQ qualified bods but that would not qualify for camp as it's only over a few weekends. And that applies to the BCDT and DIT course too.

Thanks JD for your earlier information.

I envisage problems if he's told that it's only C1..

Shame,

That only leaves PTI, MAPRIC, etc, etc or the option of joining a regular unit for a two week exercise to get some trade experience in.

Why would anyone volunteer to do a course, for a job, that is normally staffed by the downgraded, or even those on punishment? & if there is no "establishment" for this job in the TA..WTF!!!!
