MERS Coronavirus warning

Mr Hancock chaired a meeting of the UK government's emergency committee, Cobra, to discuss the outbreak. A Downing Street spokesman said there were still no confirmed cases in the country.

Does COBRA meet at a regular drumbeat or are sessions specially convened?

I'm beginning to feel that there is something we're not being told about this.
COBRA stands for Cabinet Office Briefing Room (A)
It isn't a fixed membership nor, necessarily, an indication of importance.
Critical meetings are often referred to by the acronym

Having said that, if the government isn't already having the relevant authorities put contingency plans in place then they are seriously remiss.

I would like to be proven wrong but all of my reading so far (professional journals as well as gutter press) suggests that this has the capacity to spread like wildfire and we are, almost certainly, too late to do anything about it. On the plus side the lethality is, relatively, low and it is curable. Even if it does stay below 3% (of people exhibiting severe symptoms, which won't be everyone infected, every percent of every million is still 10,000 people.

Jesus, They eat tyres as well!
Why not. They seem to eat everything else, and a rubber tyre would probably taste better than some of it.

'A viral video has emerged online of a Chinese woman gobbling a bat, which “play a critical role” in transmitting the deadly coronavirus, with a second video also featuring an alleged bowl of bat soup. The first gag-inducing clip features an unidentified woman at an undisclosed restaurant in the Wuhan province clutching what appears to be a fruit bat with chopsticks while nibbling its wing like chicken.

'Experts say bats are among the carriers of the coronavirus epidemic ravaging China. The deadly disease reportedly originated at Wuhan’s Huanan seafood market, which sold civets, snakes and other illegal exotic animals that had been infected by bats, reports Business Insider.

'The video comes after photos appeared of a Chinese market at the centre of the deadly coronavirus outbreak selling live animals – including wolf pups, foxes, rats and peacocks – to eat, according to a new report.'

I think we will pass on this one thanks.

China coronavirus: Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam declares highest level of emergency, schools to remain closed and marathon cancelled

It'll be a godsend for her, keeping people off the streets and discouraging large public gatherings.

Stand by for Alcan shares rocketing...

Truth is, too little too late. It is out there, it is, likely, global, it is transmittable even when symptoms are not showing and its estimated reproduction rate (r0) is anywhere from 1.5 to 4 depending on who is guesstimating. SARS was 2-5.

The good news is the lethality seems lower but even if 'only' 3% as so far suggested it is going to be grim.

...and in other news 14.65 million babies were born in China in 2019.

...Japan 864,000 new babies in 2019

...UK 657,076 new babies in 2018

Worldwide current birthrate is 395,072 PER DAY...

This virus most likely won't even make a dent in the population numbers, however tragic it might be for those affected...

And those that do disguising their condition. She needs to be tracked down and incinerated, whether she is a carrier or not.

'A Chinese woman has boasted how she took tablets to cheat airport scanners looking for symptoms of the coronavirus. The woman said despite having a fever she managed to leave the city of Wuhan, the epicentre of the outbreak of the deadly virus, and make it to France, leaving the Chinese embassy there desperately trying to track her down.'

On me.

I loved the absolute insouciance with which HMG said

' 2,000 people have arrived in UK from Wuhan since the outbreak was confirmed.'

- a more vivid indication of how see-through tissue-paper Britain's borders have become would be hard to find.

Pointless fact: the PROVINCE in China where the Corona Virus started (Hubei) - has the same population as UK..... :boggle:

In the same way as WWI, WWII, the '18-19 ;Flu epidemic and communism/socialism which killed half a billion plus in the 20th C made no dent in the worlds population.
However the cricket looks good in SA.
E2A corrected by @Goatman , I hit m instead of b.
I've done that before as well.

I forgot to mention, also: The incubation period previously given as 5 days.........well now they are saying it could be up to 14/15 days.

So basically they have no fcuking idea other than it is contagious, it is capable of spreading and killing people. I reckon they must be flapping though for the Chinese to be rapidly building, what amounts to, a portakabin hospital. They are doing it because the hospitals in the area are/will not be able to cope. That will be the tipping point when patients are left out and contact more people................cue: Sportshalls with rows of beds.

Think you're missing a couple of zeros there?

[ Mao was responsible for far more than that on his ownsome lonesome. ]

The point stands though.

Ref the last portacabin bit - effectively a quarantine area as well. With control over who counts the body bags.
Mind you, it shows an ability to react that we might envy.

I used to be on the county emergency/disaster management team as a volunteer - basically manning the phones in a bunker cellar - did some courses and exercises. The main thrust was for war emergency planning, but you could rapidly overlay this type of scenario if it gets seriously out of hand. We used to get together for a chat and a cup of coffee once a month. COBRA get together as needed, membership consists of core members and experts as required.

At the risk of attracting some tinfoil being thrown at me: Ever since I did the emergency planning thing and then after living in Florida with the possibility of hurricanes, and here in Texarrse with the possibility of tornados I always have go bags packed for the family, minimum of a few weeks worth of tinned stuff and pasta, flour, rice and sugar on hand along with a full bottle of propane for a camping cooker. It is so disjointed here you are fcuked without being prepared. The UK at least has a connected health and emergency services network.

I am guestimating at 200-250 million dead because of Corbyns beloved politics but agree.
Ahhh I see my mistake and have corrected it.
I am a silly old duffer.
