Welcome to the Army Rumour Service, ARRSE

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial military website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. I hope I've posted this in the right place... Apologies if I haven't.

I have a photo of an un-named relative that I'm trying to identify. The picture was taken in 1951 to commemorate his receipt of the Meritorious Service Medal.

Does anyone know if the names of those awarded this medal is published anywhere? I've searched high & low but have not found anything.

    Many thanks,
    Jon

  2. Try this link Search Results. Hopefully you have enough other information to be able to narrow it down.

  3. You won't find him in the London Gazette. MSMs in general didn't start appearing in the gazette until 1997. Prior to this, only the 'immediate' WW1 MSMs for gallantry were recorded.

  4. Yes, sorry, my link was garbage. My excuse was I was on my phone & couldn't be arsed opening the pdf s.

  5. Hi, thanks for your replies.

Had already investigated the London Gazette & come to the same conclusion.

So, in essence, I'm unlikely to find what I'm looking for then?

  6. His MSM would have been announced in the Army Orders for that year. You need to talk to a medal anorak - of which I am not. There is a forum where they all hang out, but I can't remember what it's called: British Medals Forum?. A search on Google should nail it.
