Merged threads!

Rant mode on

Ok I can't be the only person getting slightly miffed at the recent spate of thread merging. Now I'm all for keeping the forum looking neat and tidy but FFS it is really pissing me off when trying to follow a thread only to find some loon then files it away in the middle of another load of threads in one merged and completely unreadable "uber thread"! :x

Can someone please stop whoever keeps doing it.

Rant mode off.

Agree totally BS. This is becoming the arrse monster with MOD's egos coming to the fore, yet again.

However, going on past form, this thread won't last long :pissedoff:

how about if people do not post thread after thread on the same subject, read the etiquette post in the naafi then, we wouldn't have to do it.
there was nigh on 300 pages in the naafi. how many good threads are ruined by pointless one liners with LOL, classic etc?.
or pointless links thta are posted.
same old story isn't it? damned if we do damned if we don't and the usual suspects will just jump on the bandwagon no doubt.

Stop me if I'm wrong here but isn't there a wonderful thing called the arrse hole where pointless one liners can be filed away?

My bold. How about just don't. If it aint broke don't try to fix it etc.

And if you do try and search for ,say,Bad Lads Army, you get 42193 odd matches! So even if you wanted to add to a existing thread, you'd have to trawl thru lord knows how many pages to find the one you want!
I think the big bug bear here is that say I post in a 3 page thread & it get's merged into a 21 page thread,I cannot be bothered to wade thru the 21 pages to find mine!

Yes there is, but the etiquette thread is quite simple to follow.... its not rocket science and it seems reasonable.

However, this isn't our NAAFI its everyones, am happy to go with the majority and will start a thread accordingly....

For what its worth am not aware of threads being merged, will ping the other NAAFI Mods and come back to you.

THe internet links and funnies get pooled, there is even a sticky at the top for them,, same with Ebay, that way those punters who enjoy them know exactly where to go.

Quite happy with stickies, my point is this. If I decide to start a discussion on the pros and cons of midget porn and people start to respond and we are having a good discussion, that thread would suddenly find itself loaded into the porn thread. The discussion would then lose all meaning when responses to god knows how many other porn related threads get mingled in with it's own subject responses. Ok I might have used a fairly flipant example but hopefuly you get my meaning. There is no point in having a discussion board that is going to become unusable as a result of merged and therefore hard to follow discussions.

C-C & PG.

I realise that keeping the forum on track is not easy. I am also glad I do not have the role and responsibilities of a MOD. 8)

However, some of the points above are very valid. If a post is merged it is often with the 1st thread opened - under a completely different title to threads 2 - 3 etc. While tiding up is fine if you are looking for something under the title of thread 2 or 3 then it is difficult as they are now sitting under title #1. Confusing? - bet your arrse it is.

Solution? Must admit I don't know, but how about, if a thread is merged that the title of the thread being moved is kept, as a locked post, with the link to the new area. This linking thread can be deleted after a reasonable time - say 50 to 60 years

PG, you say that you are unaware of merged threads, but please be assured - the monster of the merged threads is out there and growing!

Fair cop.....

I can understand if the same old threads are being dug up and rehashed like that fcukign pingu game, but if a thread is popular and being used then it should be left alone....... I agree with that, if I didn't I would have drop kicked that 49 Para pants over next doors garden wall :D

Perhaps if some posters stopped equating "I started a thread in the NAAFI" with "I can now validate my self worth as a human being and feel the gaping chasm inside me is now, temporarily, filled till I feel the need to start another thread that has been done before to prove how big and clever I am" and thought about what might already be in the NAAFI and add something to an existing thread which either contribute to its richness or drag a cr@p thread out of boneland it might help.

A bit.

The solution is this Auld-Yin. Create sub folders within the naafi bar with each individual thread moved to a relating catagory. All porn threads could be filed in a folder for porn threads, bingo, tidy forum and all threads remain under their original titles.

I am a genius.

Your link is to a merged thread, not a sub catagory containing idividual threads.

The NAAFI is here for everyone to enjoy whether you are Serving, TA, ex-regular or civilian....

Please treat this as an environment similar to a real life NAAFI bar, with the exclusion of microwaving turds and trashing the growler machines.

On a military camp the NAAFI bar is a place for members of the forces to swap stories, quaff beer, tell lies occasionally pan each others lights in and enjoy the company of like minded people. Outsiders are generally entertained by the antics and carryings on, and in time some of them are accepted into the circle and become valued members.

Sprogs that gob off are usually dealt with by the senior Toms or junior NCOs and once they've had a word they fall in line and before long contribute valuably to the drinking circle.

Civilains occasionally stuggle to take in the bond and common denominator between serving and ex members and try to muscle in and steal the thunder, in reality all they are doing is making a cnut of themselves..... Sometimes irritating, sometimes entertaining.... Remember you are being laughed at, not laughed with

Before opening your mouth in the NAAFI think:

1, Is what I am saying funny or relevant?
2, Is what I am saying contributing or of any interest to anyone with this circle of like minded people?
3, Is what i'm saying suitable for the NAAFI bar or would it be better placed in another forum or website?

With the above in mind a couple of Stickies have been put in place in the Lamp and Sandbag & Naafi to try and reduce the rapid flow of pages within the bar in an effort to maintain the interest of everybody.

And where in the comprehensive list of 3 rules does it mention "Is my thread similar to someone elses?"

Oh that's right IT DOESN'T.

And check the poll CC, so far the numbers seem to speak for themselves....

yes the poll does have figures, you are right, and how many have submitted in the poll but not said a word on here?
so anyone can press a choice and not give a damn really.

as for sub forums, how much space does the admin have on the server? and even the mods cannot be on here 24/7, so yes there are spates of activity going on, and even with the stickies people still post all over the place. as i said earlier damned if we do etc...

Ok, as an IT Systems Analyst with a background in server management, I'm fairly sure I'm on solid ground here. If you take three threads that are 30Kbs in size each they add up to a total of 90Kbs. If you merge them you end up with one thread that is 90Kbs in size. How does that save space? It doesn't, stop clutching at straws...
