Mercedes

So how much of a given Merc is actually uniquely made by Mercedes, solely for a Mercedes?
I'd guess at pressing & casting (head + block)

However small engines may have come from Renault ?

My last car in the uk was a 300 e class diesel and I loved her it was like driving a gentlemans club and I was a sad day when a porridge wog took her to Scotland, now I drive a Dodge Ram Rebel a 5.7 litre hemi with the touch of Mercedes merger with a ZF 8 speed box and adjustable Bilstiens, air suspension it has a smooth ride on the highway yet it's an exellent off road vehicle, I've always hankered after a G wagen but this will have to do

There is an afwul lot of Renault in recent model small Mercs.

The new Mercedes pickupis entirely tarted up Nissan Navara (there's the Renault link again), except its a 40 grand Navara

I've had two Mercedes workshop managers provately admit that Renualt are building more relaible and cleaner engines than Mercedes at the moment. Don't be entirely surprised if Renault Master engines start appearing in Sprinters in the next couple of years.
The Mercedes Citan is just a Renault Kangoo in a new suit

not me I would want a pontoon or an Adenauer model
I might of but for the performance, it revs to 7 1/2 grand ( not bad for a 1970 v8 ),and you can get the back wheels to break away on a dry road if you floor it from ten mph. The fact that it looks like a jukebox out of a whorehouse from the front just adds to its appeal to me.
My girls call it cruellaa ( from the 101 dalmations) if you have seen her car in the film you will know why.

They start at £27k +VAT , tempting as I will need a new double cab soon.

If you must have a Mercedes Navara wait a little while.
Most buyers are waiting for the V6 to arrive, four cylinders will be discounted a little once the six arrives

I did hear tell that there are four cylinders undold because buyers are holding out for the bigger engine. Don't know how true that is.

Don't know how close to Birmingham you are but the Commercial Vehicle Show is onin a couple of weeks. Most manufacturers have their latest pick up offerings there.

How's about a Fiat-

Seen one a few weeks ago and was shocked at the poor panel alignment and orange peel paint job

I was collecting a lorry from service at out local Merc commercials dealer a couple of weeks ago
Whilst waiting for they keys I was idly looking at the pickup, I think the sales guy was a little agrieved when I laughed at him whenhe gave me a price and said "How much? Its just a Datsun in a posh frock..."

which is the double cab which snaps in half ?

My Dad had a 1976 280SE (W126?) When I started driving in the 81 which put me off a bit as the styling was a bit old man with its tartan style material but it went like a rocket.

After I managed to get out of the company car (2.5 V6 Mondeo Ghia X) thing at work I went for a W211 E320 which I kept for six years and sold it at ten years for £4k with 130k miles on the clock. It only ever needed new a set of pads, a glow plug and a secondary battery.

Then I went for an S350 Bluetech. On the second day the engine light came on and it turned out to be a NOx sensor in the exhaust, apparently a very common fault due to a duff batch, the warranty didn't cover it and I had to pay £630 to have it fixed.

Two and a half years later (last month) another engine light which turned out to be the motor under the turbo that opens/closes some vanes in the inlet manifold. That cost £740. So I'm feeling less happy about the reliability but the drive is fantastic and it has lots of extras such as radar, rear blinds, Harmon Kardon sound system.

It does have some creaking in the plastic around the bottom of the seats and a rattle in the door above the handle which drives me mad. I've got the MB Workshop Information system and will look at taking the door trim off in the summer and trying to fix the rattle.

I can only afford to run the car as I use an independent MB specialist and not the dealer which I have a trust issue with after my only visit to them.

I'm on the Benz World forums as well and had followed @Eric England posts about the S Class rebuild after the head on in China. I don't feel entirely comfortable in small cars after I was in a mass pile-up and my Rover SD1 was the just about the only untouched car and the small cars were so badly bent up we couldn't get people out easily.

I live in province so I only have carnal knowledge of my wife, the neighbours, the neighbours dog, the pastor and some slower farmyard animals

Had 3 W221 S350s myself, and had stupid problems with all three. DPFs, they smoked like crazy on supermarket diesel and the seatbelt buckle on the second one fell apart @ under 20k miles. The AMG one I had came with 20 inch rims, and it drove like a bitch: tramlined and bump-steered all over the place. Switched to 18 inch wheels, and it was like a different car.

When S Class number three had to be dragged off by the dealer (it wouldn't start) they had so much warranty work on that they had to rent me an E Class from McCausland Car Hire. All of their own courtesy cars were out.

One would think you’d learned your lesson by the third or even the second?

Always liked Mercs, that, and their customer service. I must have been lucky with my E and A classes (the old ones) I don’t like the new Vauxhall Astra lookalike on the A class.

Great seats, good sound system and no bits fell off. I didn’t particularly treat them with kid gloves they were working motors.

The only reason I changed was because I need the room in the boot. And the Mercs don’t have it.
