Medicals before courses

Welcome to the Army Rumour Service, ARRSE

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial military website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. Who came up with the idea of having medicals before courses? I'm in a specialist unit and have been told I have to attend a medical at Grantham before my next course. The course runs Saturday - Saturday and they won't let me have a medical during the course or at a weekend. I can't have a medical with my own doctor, so now I have to travel up to Grantham on the Friday and be there for 9.30am.

Which donut came up with this idea?

Do the people who come up with these ideas not realise we work during the week? It's not just a case of going to Grantham, it's the fact I have to use up another days annual leave over this and lose a days pay. Also, to get to Grantham for 9.30am I will have to travel the day before.

Can't something be done about this? Why can't specialist TA go through their local TA centre for admin things like this rather than going through Grantham.

It's a complete farce and I'm incredibly pissed off.

  2. In exactly the same position, despite having attested / entrance medical in August. Done TAFS 1 & 2, passed Risk Reduction run, pressups & situps for age related fitness test, but now have to to have another medical back at unit prior to Part 1B, obviously afraid I'll keel over!

    It is utterly ridiculous.

Can you hear the sucking sound as the fun is steadily escapes from the TA?

Ah, maybe thats becasue i'm in the same unit as Zebedee!!

What is even dafter is that after being in for over nine months and attending a few training weekends the Army has suddenly decided that we must all supply proof that we have been immunised against TB, Polio, Dyptheria and something else.

As i haven't been registered with a GP for two years now (my own fault) this has been difficult for me to do especially as they only gave me four weeks to get it sorted or i would have to miss the part 1b course in Feb. So i found a new GP who eventually agreed to give me all the jabs again becasue they wouldn't be able to get my records from my old GP in time.

So i've now had the best part of half a day off work getting this sorted out plus having a load of jabs that i don't need.

What really takes the biscuit is that i have since found out that i could have all the jabs when i have my pre part 1B army medical in a few weeks time!

Its an absolute farce - oh and we still haven't been paid!

  5. Where are you doing yor part 1b if its grantham i may be on the same course

  6. Aye, Grantham on Feb 10th assuming i don't keel over after having my jabs on friday!

I'm the tall good looking one with the RE cap badge.

  7. Mate im RE cap badged as well

  8. Have we met then? Are you based at Chilwell with 170? We are going over there on the 3rd for our kit issue so perhaps i'll bump into you then.

  9. Medicals at our place are a laugh....

I need one for the Cpls course i'm on in Feb...

Got told that the doc will be in on the week before the course....

What happens if he get's held up after work or just doesn't feel like coming in....?

I don't go on my course and weeks of effort down the pan!

Why can't TA people in limited numbers you regular Army MO's?

Or why can't my sqn set-up are deal where we can book an appointment ourselves to visit the doc?
