Med discharge policy change

Hi all,

I’m a Cpl and been in nearly 12 years. I’m now 9 months down the recovery pathway after a nasty pilon fracture of my left leg/ankle (basically shattered my tibia at the ankle joint). I’ve got 3 screws, an ankle impingement meaning I have little dorsiflexion and muscle wastage meaning little plantar flexion. I’ve been told by 3 specialists I’ll not run again and I won’t be able to pass any fitness tests again. The ankle joint surface is also degraded and will get worse with time leading to osteoarthritis. I also have a right hip impingement and OA in both hips. Basically I struggle to walk.

Since the recent policy change, units are looking to retain and not discharge (apparently due to retention issues). My RCMO stated if I can’t pass my MATTs I can’t promote.

Is anyone else in a similar situation? Also, has anybody had a pilon fracture (they’re not that common though!)

Hello mate,

My injury is slightly similar to your's. I dislocated my ankle with multiple fracture i.e. broken fibula and fracture in medial malleolus. And I was told same, MND perm and can't promote. But now they are going to discharge me and i am waiting for my med board hopefully soon. So, what's your situation atm? Are you retained or you been MDed?

cheers mate.
