McGuinness in Nairac body appeal

Anyone who knows the whereabouts of the body of a British soldier murdered 30 years ago should come forward, Sinn Fein's Martin McGuinness has said.
Captain Robert Nairac, an SAS-trained officer, was shot dead in Ravensdale, County Louth, in May 1977.

Captain Nairacs's murder and the subsequent search for his body was the subject of a BBC Spotlight programme.

Mr McGuinness made the appeal before a Stormont committee after being questioned about the programme.

He said he did not know the validity of the accounts given to the programme by two men claiming to have been involved in the killing.

Six men were convicted of involvement in the murder, while three went on the run.

Captain Nairac's body has never been recovered. His name only recently appeared on the list of the so-called Disappeared.

First Minister Ian Paisley has said he has spoken directly about the Disappeared with both Deputy First Minister McGuinness and Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams.

The two ministers indicated they intend to appoint a permanent victims commissioner before the assembly takes its summer break early next month.
