Max Schmeling, the boxer used as a propaganda tool by Nazi Germany, has died at home at the age of 99.

The German's two bouts with black American fighter Joe Louis fuelled Aldof Hitler's information campaign on the eve of the Second World War.,,30000-13296088,00.html

Schmeling also served in WW2 as a Fallschirmjager before he was MD'd with after injurying his back.

Aye, the man gave his best.

As much as we can ask - especially during the times in which he lived.
    Go well.

I was led to believe that he was NOT used as propaganda due to the fact that he refused to join the national socialist party.
  5. The party membership is debateable, but I think you'll find he was used as the 'face' of the Fallschirmjager in publications such as Signal and Adler. I was led to believe that he didn't join of his own accord.
Must of been a B astard fitting through the door of a JU52, which ain't the biggest of things.

  6. He declined to act as a mouthpiece for the Nazis and wasn't a party member. He was invalided out of the Fallschirmjäger after Crete where he contracted Malaria and was slightly wounded.

He resumed boxing after the war but wasn't successful and retired to take over the German Coca-Cola franchise which made him lot of money. He made friends with Joe Louis, and when Louis descended into drunken poverty, Schmeling funded him and paid his medical bills. All in all, one of the good guys.
  7. As i understand it, he was sort of dropped from the propaganda limelight after saying the British fought well, honourably and did not commit war crimes in an interview with an American journo whilst in hospital on Crete in June of '41.

At Crete, Schmeling jumped near Chania but soon came down with dysentry and heat exhaustion. Apparently he never fired a shot.
  8. Great advertisment for sporty type in the services hard as nails til called onto do his job then goes sick
  9. Bit like the PT Corps then?
  10. Interesting coincidence...the american actor 'Ozzie Davis' who played Joe Lewis in the movie 'The Joe Louis Story (1953)...has also just passed away.

The Nazi's played up the Aryan supremacy...master race crap after Max KO'd Joe in their first bout...but during the much hyped rematch...
Joe KO'd Max early in the 1st. round. After that...Max was just Aldoph's
"Sour Kraut"...Max DID 'take care' of Joe later...even footing the funeral bill for 'The Champ'.

  11. :D :D :D

Standby for news of a rematch in the afterlife unecumbered by political bollocks!!!
  12. My money's on Max.
