I'm just watching it on breakfast TV. Huge Chemical plants ablaze an airport in ruins and well what appears to be some large factories being washed over by water and debris (not sure on the last bit, but that's what it looks like.

The video on the BBC website is eye opening!

The Red Cross are reporting that the wave is now higher than some pacific islands. You just can't picture it can you.
If that's the case it will be awful devastation. We (i.e. western countries) could expect significant deployment of naval resources for humanitarian aid.

Tsunami (sp) warnings are as wide spread as Russia, Australia and The West Coast of the US. The Tsunami is due to hit the Phillippines about now. I know we get frustrated at times with things in this country, but we at least don't suffer such terrible natural disasters.

Yup, this is going to be a big one, especially if it carries across the Pacific to North/South America. 2004 mkii...

Some pacific island are barely a foot or two above sea level though, so not really that difficult. Although there should be some good surfing in Hawaii some time today though.

Terrifying, when you look and see the highest point of some islands in the pacific is 3 metres and this wave is 33ft high it really brings it home.

Radio 4 were reporting that the wave front is 1m in deep water. The whole of the Pacific rim is going to get hit badly.

Well, if you are in Japan, I hope you can swim. The video coverage on the BBC show scenes of complete devastation. There's coverage of what look like fairly sizable ships being carried considerable distances inland by the water. I hope the casualties are minimal but it looks extremely serious.

'1 metre in deep water?!"

If that's the case, then a lot of people are going to die. After the last one, there was a report about an Australian yacht which was in deep water when the wave passed under them. The water level only rose about 6" in the 20mins that the wave took to pass. The real problems started when the wave 'ran aground' in shallower water and had nowhere to go but ashore.

I'm at home today and have Sky News on. They have cut across to one of their reporters in Hawaii. You can hear the sirens and see lots of traffic clogging up the roads in the middle of the night as they try to flee. Tourists are being advised to return to their hotels and stay above the 3rd floor.

This earthquake is 1000 times more powerful at it's epicenter than the one that hit Christchurch last month.

Some really freaky video feeds earlier this morning, one that stood out being a lwooden building well on fire being carried along with the sea of other wreckage by the Tsunami wave.

On the BBC website they have a clip of the wave coming ashore. You can clealy see cars moving along the roads which are being cut of in both directions. There is no way the people in those cars can survive, when large lorries and even houses are being swept away. You could clearly see the wave moving some very large buildings. I suspect if that wave was coming towards you, whether you were religous or not, you would be praying to every god that there is or has ever been.
