Mass Shootings in the US

Nine shot dead in San Jose CA and virtually no comment on this site, nor indeed in the mainstream news services.

Are we becoming desensitised ?

I think it's a case of, if the Yanks don't care why should we? Their society is so ****ed up these events are considered to be the price of "freedom". An individuals "rights" trump responsibility and accountability.

Appears the shooter may also have set his house on fire prior to the shootings, interesting way to conceal/destroy any evidence?

Sounds like it could have been a hell of a lot worse.

'The Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Department revealed weaponry they found as law enforcement agencies concluded three days of searching the charred Angmar Court home, which caught fire from a makeshift time-delayed device Cassidy left before he went on a shooting rampage Wednesday morning.

'Friday, bomb technicians detonated a bundle of batteries and wires on the off-chance that it might be explosive. It wasn’t. Soon after, the sheriff’s office released a list of Cassidy’s weapons cache. That entailed more than a dozen Molotov cocktails — improvised incendiary devices — a dozen firearms including handguns, shotguns and rifles — and more than 25,000 rounds of ammunition.

'Deputy Russell Davis also confirmed the suspicion that Cassidy set his Angmar Court home on fire early Wednesday morning, but did so with a contraption that ensured the fire only captured neighbors’ attention long after he had left to carry out the Bay Area’s deadliest mass shooting, gunning down nine of his coworkers at a Valley Transportation Authority rail yard before fatally shooting himself as a deputy and police officers closed in.

“He put a pot full of bullets on the stove, then placed accelerant around the stove, to set the house on fire,” Davis said. The arrangement created a time-delay effect that ensured the fire wasn’t noticeable enough to be reported until a few minutes after the Wednesday morning shootings.

'The sheriff’s office, which searched Cassidy’s home along with San Jose police, the FBI, ATF and San Jose Fire Department on hand, also found that his guns and ammo were “strategically placed around the dwelling, giving him quick access to deadly force wherever he was inside the house.'

Surely there are less violent ways to ask someone to turn the music down?

'Two people have died and more than 20 were injured in a shooting outside a billiards club in Hialeah, a town to the north of Miami in Florida, the US police said.

"I am at the scene of another targeted and cowardly act of gun violence, where over 20 victims were shot and 2 have sadly died," Miami-Dade police director Alfredo Ramirez III said in a tweet on Sunday.

'A white Nissan Pathfinder pulled up to the location and three people got out with assault weapons and handguns and started firing into the crowd that was gathered for a concert at the venue, CNN reported.

'CNN said about 20 to 25 of those injured were taken to a number of nearby hospitals.

'The shooting took place early on Sunday morning, CBS4 Miami said, and added that at least one of those injured was listed in critical condition. CBS4 Miami said police had no one in custody as of early morning.'

That's about something more than grumpy neighbours, for sure.

This is a US television news story on the same subject. They test the same product as in your post.

Here's a US newspaper story on it.
Parents consider buying bulletproof backpacks as gun violence shapes their children’s lives

When her sons were growing up in West Philadelphia, Monica Peay-Matthews taught them how to duck bullets: Stop and hit the ground. Find a wall. If you run, make sure to zigzag.

Now she is considering an additional precaution: buying them bulletproof backpacks.

With regards to the above quote, I don't know what's worse, that parents would consider it a good idea to buy bulletproof backpacks for their kids, or that it was normal to teach them how to duck bullets.

Obviously no need for gun safes in Florida. Perhaps undoing locks would be too difficult for the homeowner if he was feeling threatened?

'Deputies in Volusia County, Florida, shot a 14-year-old girl on Tuesday night after she and a 12-year-old boy broke into a home, found multiple guns inside and then opened fire on deputies, according to Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood.
The girl was shot in the abdomen and the arm and is fighting for her life in the hospital, while the boy surrendered and was not injured, Chitwood said.
"I don't know what to say. Where have we gone wrong that a 12-year-old and 14-year-old think it's okay to take on law enforcement?" he said.
According to Chitwood, the children ran away from Florida United Methodist Children's Home (FUMCH) around 5 p.m. Tuesday and evaded police for hours. Around 8 p.m., a passerby told deputies he heard glass breaking at a home nearby, and deputies found there had been a forced entry into the home, Chitwood said.

'Deputes contacted the homeowner, who had left 15 minutes prior, and the homeowner said, "Nobody should be home, but I have three firearms in the house -- an AK-47, a pump shotgun and a handgun -- and 200 rounds of ammunition," according to Chitwood.
As deputies surrounded the home and tried to establish a rapport with the boy and girl, they were met with gunfire, the sheriff said. At one point, the 14-year-old girl emerged from the home and threatened to kill Sgt. Donnie Maxwell, Chitwood said.'

Another American weekend goes off with a bang. So much for retiring to Florida for a quiet life.

'At least three people were fatally shot and multiple others were injured early Sunday in the second mass shooting to erupt on consecutive weekends in Miami-Dade County, Florida, ABC News Miami affiliate WPLG reported.

'The shooting happened at around 2 a.m. in a strip mall hookah lounge restaurant following a graduation party in Kendall, Miami-Dade Police director Freddy Ramirez said at a news conference. At least three people were fatally shot and multiple others were injured early Sunday in the second mass shooting to erupt on consecutive weekends in Miami-Dade County, Florida, ABC News Miami affiliate WPLG reported.

'The shooting came a week after a mass shooting outside a banquet hall in Hialeah, Miami-Dade County, left three people dead and 20 wounded. No arrests have been made in the shooting in Hialeah, which is about 17 miles north of Kendall. Police released a security video showing a stolen SUV pull up to the El Mula banquet hall and open fire on victims leaving a concert celebrating a local rapper's birthday.

'The banquet hall shooting occurred two days after one person was killed and six were injured in a drive-by shooting in Miami's Wynwood arts district.'

Florida again.

'A man fatally shot a woman and a child inside a Florida supermarket Thursday before killing himself, authorities said, causing dozens to flee the store in panic.

'The shooting happened shortly after 11:30 a.m. at a Publix located in a strip mall that also houses small shops and restaurants.

'Detectives are reviewing security video and talking to witnesses, said Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Teri Barbera. She said investigators believe the shooter and the victims may have known each other. No names have been released.'
